I thought BMW provides the break-in oil change for free on the M35i? (or is that only for M2, M3 and other M cars?)

Hi everyone,
New mem here, also new to BMW.
Just got an U11, I’m thinking about the 1st oil change to be earlier since all of my friends in home country (recently moved from VN to FR) recommended to cut in half the manufacturer’s interval especially the first one.

Of course, the dealer guy told me to stick with the BMW’s plan which is a small shock to me: 30k km.

So I would like to know yours interval and what is the old oil looked like when you changed it? And ultimately do you think that do it sooner is better?

Thanks

This photo was posted by me in another forum. It was my first oil change at around 5K miles. I just felt comfortable performing my own changes planned at the 5K, 15K, 25K interval,…and the dealer doing the 10K, 20K, 30K,…changes until the warranty and included maintenance is done. The color of the oil was probably 75/25 highway/city driving style. Did not smell any excessive fuel dilution. Never abused as this was during the initial break-in period with handful of tiny debris specks in the filter mesh.

Thanks for the pic!

Too bad there's no dipstick..... just wondering what the new oil will look like after a couple hundred miles.

Agree 100%. Only option is just visually inspect through the fill neck if I need to to do a paper blot test. Just got to live with it I suppose. First the Toyotas are deleting the tranny dip sticks but with the oil dip stick being removed, this is getting way too absurd.

Mercedes deleted the ATF dipstick from my cars more than 25 years ago. Well, they left the tube and put a plastic seal over it. The service dept could still check it with their dipstick tool... so I bought one from the parts dept for about $40.

As for Toyota... yeah.. I looked down there(on a 2020 model)... do they really have to make changing the ATF so ridiculously complicated? <sigh>

The first Gen x1 didn't have a dip stick either. I think they started in 2010.

my 2011 e90 n55 didn't have a dipstick either, and I don't think my '08 e92 n54 had one either, but I didn't have the car long enough to do an oil change on it so I'm not positive.

Thanks for the write up. What's the part circled in blue? It appears it's included in the filter kit.

Looks like the drain cap for the filter housing.

what do BMW dealers in Hawaii charge for a simple oil change?

come to think of it, are BMWs more expensive in Hawaii? Or is it the same MSRP? If so, that makes no sense to me, as everything else in Hawaii seem much more expensive?

No idea what they charge honestly, as I always change my own oil outside of the free maintenance. BMWs here are the same MSRP as everywhere else in the US, and no markup unless it’s a special rare model. I even got a couple thousand off mine without asking while I was signing the lease paperwork.

Other dealerships are much more cutthroat when it comes to markups and availability. The BMW dealer here makes most of their money on CPO and used car sales as well as service.

As for the cost of living here, everything pretty much has to be shipped in, but labor corrupt state government, taxes on everything, plus the lack of affordable housing……there are a hundred reasons why it’s so expensive to live here.

Almost time to do my first oil change. Has anyone figured out how to reset the service light? I'm assuming there is still a service reminder

I have not reset oil service reminder at ~5K interval as the dealer will perform this at the ~10k included maintenance but this short youtube video from RJs Car Tutorial seemed straight forward.

I saw that but it's a little hard to understand. Especially the part where he says to press the start button 3 times and then presses it a lot more than 3 times....

Edit:

He does another one that's much clearer for the 740. Uses the same interface and looks identical

Press start engine button three times

Gauge cluster screen should say diagnostic mode

Press and hold gear button on steering wheel for about 15 seconds (bonus: hold it down for 20 seconds for a secret menu)

Oil change reset option should pop up first, press and hold gear button for 3 seconds. (There's also a few other options you can cycle through)

Now you don't need to speak patois
