I finally became fed up and decided about 2 weeks ago to stop tipping at all of the kiosks when making take-away purchases. I do feel a little guilty about it (but less and less so each time) but adding an extra dollar for what is already a $5 cookie (at CRMBL, Levain or Chip City - all within close walking distance for me in NYC) just pushed me over the edge.
At restaurants, if the service is really good, I will still do 20% but otherwise it is the old standard of 15%. |

I still tip extremely well at restaurants, I frequent the same places often enough they know what I want and how I want it. I think that service deserves recognition so I tip them 30-40%, time is money at lunch time.
Other places I'll only tip if I feel like they go above or beyond or feel they are overworked for their pay. Carryout pizza place gave $5 to the guy, way overworked and always do a nice job. I gave myself a $20 an hour raise this year so it doesn't matter that they are getting more. You all are free to work service jobs if you think they make that much. I've found people are becoming more demanding in the last year, hence why I jacked my prices up. |

So nobody griping about a $5 cookie or cup of coffee (probably about $4.50 pure profit for corporate town) but OMG it's the fall of civilization that they include an easy way to tip (that you can easily decline). Granted that it is amusing when the default is up in the 20%'s, and anybody who demands a tip is being rude, but it sure isn't 'making free with our money'.
Me, I'll save my indignation for the companies that really do gouge us on the stuff that we NEED (like fuel, medicine, carbon fiber parts). |

My niece that works at McDonald's (less than 2 years) makes as much per hour as I do at my job quoting/group benefits for an insurance company for 6 years.
It's true that she has to work there, and I get to work where I work, which are vastly different environments, but you get the idea. Is she over-paid or am I under-paid? Not sure. But I'm glad it's not my main source of income or I'd be looking for a different job. |

I saw a few even worse, there are a couple of restaurants now where you don't have an option of a custom tip when ordering online, so you literally have to call in and place the order.... it's gotten out of hand for sure.

My friend regularly gets to-go from Pappadeaux and he doesn't tip on to-go orders (he does tip when he dines in though). They also upcharge dishes if you order to-go vs. dine in. The kid who brought his order had the audacity to flag him down after seeing the $0 tip and said verbatim, "hey just so you know it would be nice if you could tip once in a while, we don't get paid extra for doing this other than tips." Like WTF did you do? Isn't your employer paying you? You literally did your job which was walk to the kitchen to pick up his packed food and give it to him, what about the cooks and people that packed the food... do they deserve a tip too?
Tipping culture is America is getting so ridiculous in my opinion. People feel so entitled even when service is subpar and they aren't really doing anything extraordinary. It's stupid that employers somewhat rely on their own customers to pay their employees. /rant Last edited by aliiin; 07-02-2023 at 03:36 PM.. |

It's this generation, they're largely useless because they feel so entitled, though I can't for the life of me figure out why. My mom would have slapped my teeth out of my mouth for saying what that kid said to an elder. |

I tip like I did pre-pandemic - Usually 20% for sit down restaurants. Sometimes more if we had a great time and service was exceptional. I stopped tipping for take out as it has gotten out of control and the iPad screens with 20% minimum have become annoying. We don't order food delivery.
Other services - it depends. If someone is working for below minimum because they get tips (like waiters), they should be tipped. Anyone working for minimum or above better provide exceptional service. I tip the lady that cuts my hair and always have.

I was just at Buckhorn, yesterday, and they are the king of pissing you off at the counter when it comes to tipping. I ordered a 12oz tri-tip platter, comes with 2 sides, (no drink), a burger, a bavarian pretzel, and a drink, since the combo platter doesnt come with one.
It was $91. They type your order in on this big 17" screen, then lift the screen and flip it over for you to tip and pay. 4 buttons, 15% 20% and 25%, custom tip. In the custom tip menu, is a white button, on a white background with light gray letters "No Tip," and it looks like as if its a blocked out option, but, when you click it, it actually works. For this same reason, I have stopped kiosk tipping. And minimum wage is now $15.50. Most of these places, like Chick-Fil-a, pays $16-$18. Right next to a sign, posted near the register that says, "Everyone is short staffed. Please be courteous to the people that did show up."

So worse, the people doing a majority of the work, are splitting the money with people that aren’t. I don’t think anyone who clocks out is going to stand around waiting for the manager to divide the tips and what if you have to leave early? And then there’s the issue with food not even being made, yet. You’re tipping the cashier 20%? That’s worse than tipping at the checkout line at Walmart. At least they’re bagging your groceries.

"I pretty much just stopped tipping and have reduced my tips at restaurants to 15%."
So you haven't stopped tipping then This is standard or what is expected from society. I tried to not tip at all when I was younger (I never supported this poor ass employer payment system) and people would crucify me. |
