You can still have the hands free feature and class it as a level 2 system. This is because you would still have to focus on the road. Question is not able to hack it so you can go sleep in the back seats! I said Hands Free, not Eyes Free 👀🙄

What if I’m looking to hack the system to have a relaxed ride, can I still be allowed to drive?

If the car can ‘keep up’ in the US, why wouldn’t it be able to keep up in the UK…
Image below to show you how it works.

As long as you don’t endanger other drivers, you can drive however you want, hack whatever you want. That’s your prerogative.

Just know that they limit the hands free time for a reason.

I don’t live in the UK, nor the US but road signs, road laws can change the behaviour of how the car handles things autonomously

This is correct. Traffic Jam Assistant kicks in automatically on known highways when below a certain speed threshold. It's great. The video linked in this thread is exactly that - not bombing down the highway at 85mph. You can tell because the steering wheel lights are green.

I don't know why people think keeping your hand on the wheel is such a burden. You barely have to hold it there to keep the lights from turning yellow. What else are you going to be doing with your hands?

Here where I live, it’s not uncommon to see people on the freeway eating lunch (with a fork off a takeout container), women putting on mascara, and other Darwin Award nominees going on their merry way….in cars that do not have the capability to lane keep.

This could be the dumbest thread I have ever had the misfortune of reading on Bimmerpost. Congratulations

I don't find it very interesting to drive without hands on the wheel. What surprises me today is that there is no communication between cars. It is still a one-way traffic communication. If cars communicate with each other via a fixed protocol, it will be much easier to drive autonomously. It is also possible to direct traffic flows to prevent traffic jams.

I'm not sure what the point of that video is in relation to this thread and the X1 in the UK, however many will have seen it already I'm sure; I have. But the questions below still stand.

Does the BMW X1 have level 3 autonomous driving require for legal hands off driving - No
Does the law in the UK allow for level 3 autonomous hands free driving yet in 2024 - No
Does all of the US allow for hands free driving in all states - No

I think he's just trying to provoke a response rather than a genuine question. If he watched the video he sent, at 10 minutes, the guy even says the L3 autonomous driving will come to the 7 series first and it's not going to be a software update.

I can see this being a USP for the 5 series and above for 5+ years.

I tried Waymo taxis which were level 4 autonomous driving.(i.e. empty driver's seat) That is what I really want. Kind of unnerving at first, but after the first couple of rides, I was able to take a nap in the back seat for 15 minutes while the Waymo taxi drove me around.

Sure hope we can buy Level 4 cars in the near future.... Like Miss Daily, I also sometimes shop at Piggly Wiggly and I don't want to hire a human chauffer.

Literally says Level 3 driving in the title. This has got nothing to do with your original post or what you are trying to do.

I’m certain you didn’t even watch the video all the way. Listen to the BMW rep talk about the challenges with level 3 and bringing it to countries worldwide.

And you think the level 2 X1 will handle roads well enough for a long duration…
