I've found that some USB ports are more reliable than others for music.
The one in the front on the left side of the centre console console is best for me. The one on the right side recognises the stick, but says there are no music files on it. Using a 128GB Sandisk Ultra Fit (formatted to NTFS) in a USB A to USB C convertor. Stick has combination of FLAC and MP3 files all in the root.

Will try the front left port, as currently using front right - with mixed results. Rear ports don't work at all for us. |

Maybe I am doing something wrong. Have a 2025 X1 with idrive 9. Plugged in the Samsung USB-C into each one of four ports and got nothing.

I think data on the front USB-C ports was removed as a penny pinching move at some point recently. A bit like the glovebox light. I’m surprised they haven’t removed the passenger seat yet.

Sadly, you don’t. The alternative is to use Bluetooth to connect to the phone.

Can you not use Apple CarPlay or just use the Music app on your phone with a Bluetooth connection? Check the Navigation, Entertainment, and Communication manual for the car. It details how to use it.

I know how to use it. But I want to operate and select the Music app via my Apple Carplay and not via my phone during driving.
