They are currently the future cash cows for all manufacturers as they can be manufactured much cheaper than the ICE cars but are sold to similar prices leaving a nice profit. Therefore, they get better interior quality to have buyers bedazzled.

there would have been nothing wrong w a few minor updates to idrive 7 and stopping there... everything since looks impressive but offers nothing over older idrive versions

This is blindingly wrong. The batteries are extremely expensive. EVs have a much higher build cost than their ice alternatives. At least now, that will change in the future as we scale up battery production.

Given the industry move away from physical buttons and controls, this seems OK.
I like the idea of a windshield display vs a larger “tablet” screen. |

Lots of comments from people who probably adopted the truly terrible iDrive 8 & 8.5 with the horrid tacked-on screen. I’m in a pre-LCI XB7 with those good old psychical climate buttons and integrated screens for reference.
I’m glad I waited for the crummy current system to pass over as this genuinely seems like a step in the right direction. As long as they eliminate the retarded warning symbol that takes over the HUD when the nannies think you’re too close to the car in front I’ll be a happy camper. |

I thought this was a joke at first
While the functional aspect of the new layout may turn out okay in everyday use - the new quasi-HUD-strip-thing can prove useful - I just can’t stand the design of the steering wheel and that horrid tablet This reminds me again that current BMW design team must be composed of people who never aspired to own a car which would be an emotion-evoking object one wants to interact with through all the senses and to feel the „ultimate driving pleasure”. This current team would most likely find themselves at their best sitting in the back seat of an Uber having no clue about driving a car. Even worse, they don’t understand the emotional aspect of owning a desirable car They’re giving us utility designed by kids for other kids, who just want to move from A to B. And the design language moves towards some bland and generic direction. When I look at this dash and console, it could just as well have any other brand etched all over it - and it wouldn’t matter. It’s totally lacking character and anything BMW-like Sad

Until last year, nobody made any money from any EV except for Tesla. They're way more expensive to manufacture vs ICE cars.

Love the comments:
‘This isn’t for the olds, only gen z’ Thus, BMW is hitting its target: the future, not the past.

Why is it so difficult for BMW to understand that if I wanted a Tesla experience I would buy a Tesla instead of a BMW? Or even better, a Chinese car that looks and feels like a Tesla in the UX department and almost like a BMW in the quality, but at 50% the price of a German car.
I don't know if you guys have noticed, but even the phone and nav icons are now at the bottom of the screen, something that points very clearly towards BMW getting rid of the iDrive controller as well.

[QUOTE=MartinInKansas;31764220]Given the industry move away from physical buttons and controls, this seems OK.
I like the idea of a windshield display vs a larger “tablet” screen. I don’t hate the design, but I think it’s very sad and sheeplike of BMW to scrap physical buttons. Given the move away from buttons (and therefore away from proprioception, haptic feedback and proceedural memory), to need to use your eyes on a screen away from the road what is the point in a heads up display?! Better off putting a constant live video on the screen, or having a touchscreen windscreen (both of which are absurd suggestions I know). I don’t write letters on touchscreen computer because it would be tedious. I wouldn’t buy a PlayStation with a touchscreen controller because it would be sh*t to use, so why on earth would I want to buy something 240 times more expensive that could kill someone when I have to look down. The e90 generation had the easiest to use controls. I can’t see why BMW can’t at least include a row of user programmable physical buttons as per yesteryear. |

That’s smart considering I’ve near heard of some destracted enough from engaging a turn signal they hit an old lady crossing the road. Those standards are useless unless it includes radio and climate control. Idrive 6/7 is still king in my book. I can’t stand changing anything in our IX once I’m on the road. With that said I guess I know how grandma felt when we had to provide instruction on VCR operation. |

Sad. BMW interiors were always so special and really driver focused. I own a Tesla Model 3 Performance and even to me this is a massive step back aesthetically for BMW.
iDrive 7 and 8.5 is peak in my opinion. Also, WTF is that steering wheel?? |
