Its the general trend of the US now... I completely disagree with it...

I call it the 'bubble-wrapping' of America. Everyone in this country is so damn worried about offending people, and being politically correct in every way. People are starting to safeguard their thoughts and emotions for fear of upsetting someone down the line...

Who cares if there is the profile of a boob in a picture??? Its a story about breastfeeding for crying out loud... Where were these people when National Geographic was placing pictures of African women walking around with their breasts showing?

Lets see more breasts in our everyday life

But to go to the extent of not even being able to see a picture of a child breastfeeding is ridiculous. Its natural, its a baby. The US is so weird about nudity, sex..etc. I can remember being in Europe and South America going to the beaches and seeing girls who def werent in the best shape wearing itsy bitsy bikinis, and they were proud of their bodies. Here, everyone is so touchy. Anyway, thats my opinion. I will admit that even im shy/self conscience about my body, where as my cousins who are from italy could careless. Do you think this is a cultural/regional/personal issue? Hmm..

Here is the cover of the magazine that a majority of people are disgusted with.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Readers of a US parenting magazine are crying foul over the publication's latest cover depicting a woman breastfeeding, with some calling the photo offensive and disgusting.

"I was SHOCKED to see a giant breast on the cover of your magazine," one woman from Kansas wrote in reaction to the picture in Babytalk, a free magazine that caters to young mothers. "I was offended and it made my husband very uncomfortable when I left the magazine on the coffee table."

Her reaction was part of some 5,000 letters the magazine has received in response to a poll to gage reader sentiment about Babytalk's August cover photo, which shows a baby nursing.

Several readers said they were "embarrassed" or "offended" by the Babytalk photo and one woman from Nevada said she "immediately turned the magazine face down" when she saw the photo.

"Gross, I am sick of seeing a baby attached to a boob," the mother of a four-month-old said.

Another reader said she was "horrified" when she received the magazine and hoped that her husband hadn't laid eyes on it.

"I had to rip off the cover since I didn't want it laying around the house," she said.

A national television program also ran a segment on the controversy, interviewing several people in New York who expressed disgust over the cover photo.

The picture in Babytalk was aimed at illustrating the controversy surrounding breastfeeding in the United States, where a national survey by the American Dietetic Association found that 57 percent of those polled are opposed to women breastfeeding in public and 72 percent think it is inappropriate to show a woman breastfeeding on television programs.

Babytalk executive editor Lisa Moran said though most of those who responded to the poll about the cover photo gave the magazine a thumbs up, she was surprised that some 25 percent expressed outrage.

"There is a real puritanical streak in America," Moran told AFP. "You see celebrities practically baring their breasts all the time and no one seems to mind in this sort of sexual context.

"But in this very natural context of feeding your child, a lot of Americans are very uncomfortable with it."

She said the controversy is all the more surprising in light of concerted efforts by the US government and health professionals to encourage women to breastfeed.

"Everyone is saying that breastfeeding is best for baby but there is so little support for it in public," Moran said.

She said the Babytalk cover photo marks the first time a major parenting magazine in the United States dares to break the taboo about showing a woman's breast and the outrage it has prompted is not about to discourage editors from doing it again.

"This hasn't scared us off at all," Moran said. "We're thrilled and hopefully this will help women get more support for nursing."

lol you should see the situation in indonesia...playboy got a bad rep there, even the celeb who's only wearing swimsuit on that mag is being sued by the country! and playboy indonesia doesnt have nudity, just a few swimsuit shots

Yup although the American society can be pretty close minded at times it's still a lot better compared a lot of other cultures and countries.

I'm Chinese, which means that by recent social and cultural expectation I'm supposed to be nerdy, dorky and never have sex for my entire life except for those few times to complete my "mission" and father some children, O_o ........ Which is why I get this a lot "Holy crap dude, you completely don't seem like a Chinese to me!"

Uggghhh ............

For example, my sis in law is from brazil. Born and rasied. When her and my brother first started dating, she would always be over at my house..etc. Anyway, she would always come into my room naked, topless or just in her panties and talk to me or ask if she could borrow a shirt..etc. But when i would ask to borrow one of her outfits, id take it into my room, shut the door and change. She would always ask me why i was so shy about my body, we're both women, and theres nothing to be afraid of. Now im totally comfortable being naked infront of her but it took time.

I noticed this w/ my other friends also. Before we all go out to the club we get ready together, but they always turn their backs or go into the bathroom to change. And im talking about my good friends.. maybe its a comfort issue.
That's because she's Brazilian, chances are she's well endowed in every measurement.

how the hell can someone get offended by that organ being used in the manner for which it was intended?

only in this screwed up country would breast feeding be more offensive than nipple piercing.

Well...
proof that the world has gone straight to hell in a handbasket!

I scrolled down and saw the magazine cover and didn't know what the hell the post was talking about, until I went back and read the article again and then forced myself to notice "half" a boob on the magazine cover.

You are right about the guy "horrified" and "offended"....same guy with 3 foot sex toys in his closet, hustler magazine on his bedstand and probably the guy has to register with the state sex offender dept.

The world is full of shit...and the people in it are even fuller!

Life is too short...drive a BMW!

Our country is so hippocritical and sex-phobic when it comes to the human body and the media. That photo is no more revealing than what America's Funniest Videos shows on TV. Some still can't get over Janet Jackson's breasts.

Something I never really noticed until I became a parent: puritanical christian america gets all upset over a bare breast but it's okay for them to openly display the violence of the crucifixion.

Can't have nudity or "bad" language on TV, but at 6:30 on a weeknight they can run trailers for the latest slasher horror movie (the irony here is I used to love slasher flicks, and now that I'm a dad I can't stomach them) with all kinds of graphic violence. Take the time to actually watch a horror movie trailer, and think about it from a 3-4-5 year old's point of view .... and yeah we quickly decided we won't have network channels on while our son's awake.

A PG13 movie can't have nudity, but it can have all the graphic violence you want.

The WTF part is we're all naked under our clothes. But how often do we see graphic violence in real life?

I know it's extreme, but I'm so fed up with how retarded our value system is that at this point I'd rather have my kid grow up watching porn than violence.

Time to move to Europe...I have yet to see a "slice and dice" European horror movie and nudity in films (even commercials) is commonplace...we have a warped value system which is exacerbated by the steady stream of crap coming out of Hollywood...I am convinced that they have finally trained monkeys to write scripts..the problem is that too many children grow up in front of a TV..time to yank the TV's out and make your kids read books...

the US is a really strange thing with this... unbelievable how even mothers can get shocked by seeing a woman breastfeedng her baby
I agree that I feel uncomfortable when women do it in public but that is just me not being used to it I guess. I don't feel shocked or horrified at all!
