Never a truer word was said. Among Porsche instructors the Cayman is regarded as one of their finest achievements.

09 and 10 Cayman S' with PDK have set 0-60 marks at 4.1 seconds. Track times are silly quick too.

Giddeee up.

+1 Rennlist or 6speed etc etc. Most porsche owners respect the croc..

Same ole same...Those comments always come from people who have never driven one longer than a test drive. Or one of those who bought a Pcar for status more than performance.

LOL Makes you wonder about some of the so called 911 owners here, who have made such negative comments..Status whores? Or BS'ed about owning a Porsche?

Jezza has said that the Cayman/S is the perfect Porsche, EXCEPT that it did not have an LSD. I beleive thats been fixed for the 09/10 model years. Mid engined, small, low, Very quick, but not deathly supercar quick, and relatively affordable. Whats not to like?

There's no 135 that will touch it on the track (stock for stock - I don't want to hear about modded ECUs). Also, at 3,800rpm the VarioCam kicks in. VarioCam Plus combines variable valve timing with two-stage lift on the inlet side. This results in smoother running, better fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. As well as greater top-end power and low-end torque.
Yes, I'm sure it's uninspiring compared to a GT3, then again, most cars today are - save an Elise or Exige S. The chassis in the Cayman is still more balanced than a 911. I can definitely feel the weight out back compared to the Cayman. Put the 911 engine in the Cayman and run them back to back and I'm sure the Cayman will be quicker.

You mean, like this!

I think I understand where the OP comes from. Cayman is so well-balanced with not so much power, so it is practically impossible to drive it even close to the range where it starts to show its soul outside of the track. You take a ramp at 80 MPH at half-throttle in a 3-series and feel like Schumacher (either one), while in Cayman that would be driving at 4/10 or even 3/10 of what it's capable. No wonder it seems boring or video-gamish... Take it to the track...

I say all this after spending a lot of time in my fathers C4S..... The CaymanS is such a joy.

If you're buying a track car, there are better choices. If you're buying a street car, there are better choices. if you're buying a car for street/track, there are better choices.

The fact of the matter is, the car is simply overpriced for it's power level. If you laid the keys on the hood of a Cayman S and a Vette that cost the same amount of money and told me to take my pick, I'd take the Vette any day of the week.

Eventually Porsche is going to burn through blind brand loyalty people have for it, and they're going to be screwed.

I don't know, I'd agree with this guy about the vette:

While it is not crazy fast - the new 2010 Cayman S with PDK posts faster times 0-60 and 1/4 mile than the 335i. That is pretty quick IMHO.

The only reason it may feel slower is that it is a far more balanced car overall.

It feels very organic, if you ask me.

Better choices for the track often have worse hp/$ ratio. For example Lotus Exige Cup - only 245hp for $90K... Horsepower is not everything.

But I would agree that Cayman would be sweeter with 150-200 more HP.

The reason you feel uninspired is because of the N54 engine and its torque. I test drove a 07 CS because my 1 is in the lemon process and after the first test drive I felt the car was very bland compare to the 1. Why? Number of reasons from the less ergonomic controls provided by the M steering and shifter to lack of acceleration and braking of the the 135i.

Yup, the CS felt (pre-09 with pdk) tame because the lack of torque, comparative, and I did not push the car that hard. The brakes did not feel as capable compared to my 135i but perhaps this was due to BMW has more brake assist? However, that's to the extend of it. Did you have a chance to push the car into a hard corner? The CS dances through corners and feel like a fish darting in water, and you feel more confident in mid turn because it has less mass pushing the car outwards. On the other hand, 135i feels substantive when you toss it into a corner, like a big pitbull somehow able to negotiate the turn quite well as well. However it's much easier to approach the limits in the 1 than in the CS.

Driving the 135i is melodramatic, the shifter is heavier, slightly longer and requiring more force and deliberate action, the engine accelerates with more urgency under low speed, and steering requires more effort too. Basically 1 makes the driver feels like he has a big pair. The CS, on the other hand, is more graceful, the shifter are lighter and the throw is shorter, not quite as light or short as s2000, and the pedals are placed closer for heel-n-toe. It eats up corner like nothing. To get your blood pumping you have to drive it fast, really fast, much faster than 135i can handle. When the sales drove the car I felt scared... Just a little. More of a momentum car than 135i and requires more skills to drive fast. Despite the lower hp the 1/4 mile times are very similar so I imagine the CS will probably gain ground over triple digit.

Trust me, I am losing sleep whether I should get another 1 or a 07-08 CS. Every time I come back to the 1 I read about more HPFP problem, forget it. I have had enoough of that. The risk of owning another out weights the enjoyment.

Here's what an exhaust can do for CS. I haven't heard one from 135i that sounds as good
