The problem is the 24 hour news cycle. In order to sustain themselves the news networks like CNN have to hype up every single last issue to the nth degree in order to keep feeding material to the masses. Nothing is different, it's just every event is now magnified and exaggerated a hundred times over.

Plus on top of that, talking about the last decade, the internet has added itself as a news medium that we haven't had in the past. Before we had to rely on TV reports that are broadcasted at certain times, or the newspaper. Now we have any news we want within seconds via computer or smart phone. I think that difference really adds to the magnification of events because we hear about them that much more than before.

No more turbulent than any other times in human history. Take the medieval times for instances. Black plague wiping out one-third of the Irish population in a few months. Stop being scared of your own shadow.
