I've also read that the reason commercial crashes are so rare, besides the obvious professional pilot training, is because statistically, the odds of crashing when you have two pilots upfront is extremely minimal. Out here in Colorado, we get a number of fatal accidents over the mountains. Recently, someone was flying with his wife and two kids trying to get back home taking a route over the 14,000 foot mountains in weather and flew it directly into the side of the mountain killing all on board. I'm sure he wasn't a stupid pilot. Just inexperience leading to a bad decision that everyone paid for with their lives. I'm a huge aviation enthusiast and also fly RC models. I hear about crashes all the time. Just do not fly if there's a chance you may question your situational awareness. |

what I meant by stupid pilot, is someone taking unnecessary risks that can be considered a stupid decision
mountain flying seems frightening :P and I have to do it for my cross country

With that said, then I'll use 'no' to answer the initial question. 99% of the accidents aren't cause by "stupid" pilots. I've seen as many faulty airplane crashes as I have pilot related. By faulty aircraft, I mean, engines fall apart, something about paint issues, all kinds of weird things. I guess when you're trying to cruise a chunk of metal in mid-air, anything is possible to bring it down. I remember about 5 months or so ago, maybe longer, we had a guy ask for a clearance on the ground (departed Uvalde TX enroute to someplace in Florida I think). Prior to issuing the clearance, HE asked about the weather along his route, and we told him about the weather. He opted to depart anyways, flew directly into the weather and fell from the sky at 20 something thousand feet. That was stupid. Don't be that guy! Like someone said earlier, if you're not sure, don't risk it. |
