This probably is the replacement for the NA I6. The real question is how does it drive. If the driving experience is as good as or better than the NA I6 then everyone goes away happy. If it is worse, then we can blame the government for the fuel economy rules. This engine should be a lot lighter than the NA I6 which could have a positive effect on handling.

You corrected your horsepower mistake on the A4 but not the acceleration.
Audi lists 0-60 at 6.4 seconds... http://models.audiusa.com/a4-sedan/d...specifications |

meh....the power is luke warm. First Audi's 2.sl0w with 211hp. They refuse to up the HP at least for the Audi line, and give some separation from VW products.
Just recently the Hyndai sonata rolled out its 4cyl turbo with 275hp ![]() ![]() Damn turbo lag, i dont care. I would kill to have an EVO 300HP 4cyl engine under the hood of an A4 or 3 series ![]() ![]()

This is going to be a great motor! I mean, I love the N52, but this motor with 258 torques, 245 hp, and almost 36 mpg (combined) is quite astonishing. That is going to be a beauty of an engine for the baseline 3-series! The 4 cylinder, direct injection, turbo charged motor, has been getting quite popular the last 5 years. But, I think BMW has been waiting to get this one right. I mean, as of now it will smack many of its competitors in the segment in the face.

I think it is about time BMW had a 2.0 litre turbo four cylinder. The Audi/VW unit has been fantastic throughout the range, in variations of tune (See Golf R).
I/m obviously biased, my wife and I bought one, however I think looking purely at the peak figures for a small motor like this is selling it short. The VW 2.0T has such a breadth of talent, and 'eager at any rev' demeanour that you always feel you have the pep and grunt to get you where and when you need to go. I don't expect any less from the BMW unit, and knowing BMW all competitive models will be faster than the audi offerings. In North America where we don't have half the engine selection of our European friends, this is the kind of motor that can far exceed the expectations of the masses, please the hooligan enthusiasts among us, and return ridiculously good milage to everyone. A fantastic 335i "lite" is likely just around the corner.

I can't wait to see this 28i turbo 4cyl chipped. Although it's a move away from the NA I6 we love, this does open the door for more people to step in at entry level and get some added performance out of their 28i models using chips and other turbo upgrades. That's good in a way. Then again it's bad because now we're Audi...

I wonder how much this engine weighs?
Also, I'd say this is modelled after the N55 rather than the N54 - using a twin scroll turbo as well as double VANOS/Valvetronic. |

Just sad to see the NA I6 being replaced. Its was such a huge part of BMWs history. Power delivery was always so silky and smooth, no other engine could compare when it came to that. IMO But i understand times are changing and people get giddy over fuel economy. ![]()

If the turbo can provide the airflow and Valvetronic can handle it, I wonder how high this engine's redline can go with the oversquare design. I believe that Valvetronic is somewhat limited by high RPM's though, no? |

Actually the bore and stroke numbers may be accidently reversed in the chart above. Running the numbers (mm -> inches) one gets 3.53/3.31 for bore/stroke, which is the reverse of the N54/N55 numbers being 3.31/3.53 for bore/stroke.
Also, compression ratio's are 10:1 for both... Makes one wonder... either way, it looks like a nice little power plant! |

Great move by BMW, it's a good engine, however, what'll make it better is aftermarket support, wait till what the tuners come up with.

finally and very good!!!! I think when those little sub-1er front drivers come on stream, there's going to be super lil one with this very engine. The Golf is going to get a run for its money on its turf. Go BMW!!!

Those are good numbers, damn. Given BMWs history in producing engines with smooth and linear power delivery with good economy, I'd say this engine is about to set the bar against recent 4cylinder turbo competitors when all factors are taken into account.
Yes the Sonata engine makes 274HP, but every article I have read says its gritty and unrefined. Yes the S2000 made about the same power 10yrs ago but you had to keep it below 3rd gear to get any accelaration at all, terrible engine. And to think it puts out about the same power and more torque than my 4.0 V6 4Runner when new, an engine that was new in 2003 and has variable valve timing, geez thats progress. I can grow to like turbo cars... as long as long as the turbo is as durable as the rest of the engine and the power delivery is smooth and linear and....it sounds good, I think thats the biggest challenge, and its subjective. Now if they would get realistic about the badging... 28i, seriously? whats the point? Who are they trying to impress. I like that the other manufacturers factually state "2.0T". Why is Audi so honest in its capacity badging, while Merc and BMW continue to play the "Mine is bigger" game.
