I'm doubting that the 7D2's high-ISO performance will beat the 5D3. I'm just hoping that it's a stop or two better than the 7D. We'll see. If it's better, then the 5D MkIV will soon follow, using the new sensor technology. It'll be interesting to read more about the new technology and see more real tests.

Just from what I have seen so far, I would not trade my 5D3 for it for image quality. The 1DIV and 5D3 both have it beat at 6400 anyway.
The AF and FPS are the main reasons I went for it. One thing I will say is that it does NOT seem to have the same blue channel noise problem at low ISO that the original did, or at least not in my very small test so far. I will be going out momentarily for the customary new camera moon shot with it |

Here is a test shot at 6400 IS0 with no cropping, no adjustments made, and all sharpening and NR turned off in DPP.

On the other end of the scale, Canon refurb site has a deal going on with stacked codes. I picked up an SL1 body for under $300 before taxes. The SL1 with the 40mm pancake will slip into a side pocket of my normal bag. Not a bad lightweight rig.
Check Canon Price Watch for the deal.

does anyone know how Canon deals with getting sent refurbed equipment?
I have my 7D body sitting at ~140K shots and a lens that has a lose focus ring. Id like to get them both rebuilt but I cant find any info about that kind of thing on Canon's site. |

There are 3 service centers in the US. California, Jersey and Virginia. If you google "canon factory service center" you should be able to get the number of the one closest to you. If you get them on the phone they can talk you through the process.

Pro photogs high ISO 7D2 shots show off the capabilities far better than my quick shots.

I cancelled my order at B&H and picked a 7D MkII up locally (apparently I wasn't in the first 300 customers to pre-order at B&H). Charging the battery now.

If somebody wants to put up some comparison shots, ill attach a few of my (rare) night shots with my 7DI. Link to the album - View post on imgur.com Theyre pretty solid, I think. But the noise is noticeable. I also had an issue with softness at higher ISO, but that may be a consequence of the slow shutter speed that I needed to run. Back then my fastest lens was F/4, I know, terrible. haha If anyone is in Vegas next week you can go to GRC and get some comparison night shots with a 7DII! Canon 7D MkII Compared to 5D MkIII at ISO 3200 by dcstep, on Flickr
5D MkIII Compared 7D MkII at ISO 3200 by dcstep, on Flickr With the 5D3 I used the 500mm f/4L IS and the 2.0x TC-III, while with the 7D2, I used the 500mm plus the 1.4x TC-III. I converted both Raw images to tiff in DPP and applied slight adjustments, but no noise reduction in DxO Optics Pro 9.5 and converted to RGBs JPEG after cropping the 5D2 slightly more to get the size the same. The 5D3 ends up being 2328x2328 pixels. The 7D2 is 2448/x2448 pixels, due to its higher pixel-density. Forgive the dust spot on the 5D3 image, but I wanted no corrections. 7D is first and 5D second. What do you think?

Another ISO 400 test shot, -1EV:
Canon 7D MkII Test Shots by dcstep, on Flickr Loving this camera. Using the 500mm with the 1.4x TC-III, the AF is almost as fast and accurate as with the bare lens. Colors look great. It's so much easier to handle than the 5D3 with the 2.0x TC-III that it's not even funny.

I think the 7D noise seems "cleaner" than the 5D MkIII noise. But the amount of noise is fairly even.

To me, it's pretty much a draw after you've adjusted the 5D3 to account for its inferior "reach." That crop-sensor angle of view is huge here, particularly for those of use using long lenses and still cropping.

I agree, that 7D MkII noise would clean up nicely. No real obvious banding or patterns in it. And the huge blue negative space doesn't help. If that were a sports pic with a varied background, the noise would be far less noticeable.

Here's the real advantage of the 7D MkII over the 5D MkIII, getting more pixels on a focal-length limited shot. Here I use the 500mm along with the EF 2.0x TC-III, for an effective reach of around 1600mm:
First Moon Shot With New Canon 7D MkII by dcstep, on Flickr This is 3492x3492 pixels vs. 2328x2328 for the 5D3 with the same lens combination, cropped to approximately the same size. There's no NR here either, at ISO 800, 0EV. I love the new viewfinder layout, with a level and user-controlled selection of the things that you can see in the VF. The shutter is quiet and fast, even in normal mode. It gets super quiet in the quiet mode, but slower also. Incredible camera. Canon should sell millions.

I love the new viewfinder as well, although if had to remember the meter is on the side versus the bottom, ala the 1 series. I watched a couple of the Canon videos last night and tweaked the custom controls more to my liking. I am really looking forward to test the AF on some

Is the quiet mode on the 7D MkII quieter than on the 5D MkIII?

I haven't tried quiet mode yet, but the normal shutter is quite a bit quieter than normal on the 5d3, so I'm betting it is. I will know more after this weekend when I really get to put it through its paces.
Waiting for a shot from your new toy as well. When is it due? |
