Yeah, they'll still steal that size. The infringements that I've found have almost all be relatively small sizes.

I've seen my shots on personal websites before, but nothing commercial. And 1024x768 is too small to print, except maybe on a brochure. I've even thought about reducing the resolution in Photoshop before uploading, but that's just one more step in my workflow.

Someone at Flickr show program in an option to watermark all downloads. Maybe upload your watermark and have Flickr paste across the front of any downloaded image. That way people could enjoy your image on Flickr but not be able to steal it as easily.

All my stolen images that I've found have been on websites, where 1024p is plenty for most uses. You and I may think in terms of a 250 or 300-dpi print, but people use way less resolution. I've actually had someone strip my copyright out of the EXIF, add there on and put them up for sale, even adding little stories about how excited she was when this or that happened. That was a big lawsuit, but turned into nothing when she filed for bankruptcy. At least she took my stuff down.

I didn't know that Flickr had a watermark function in their upload menu. I'll look for that. As is, I only use LR to add the watermark. It's an extra step, but fast, Import, select all, Export (now that it's set up).

The big problem is, you need to spend a day or two every few months searching for thieves. I think that the Google Images reverse lookup is better than tineye, but both do their best if you use an original file instead of a link to a file. I don't understand why, but I get more hits with the original file.

I was only suggesting that Flickr program in that option. There's a typo in my post that changes the sentence a bit, hence the confusion. AFAIK, Flickr does not offer that feature.

As part of my Amazon PRIME subscription, I'm allowed to upload unlimited images, so long as they're not for commercial use. File formats include jpeg, Raw, tiff, etc., with no size limitations. In contrast, Google limits you to a relatively small jpeg size in their "Unlimited" scheme.

I have visions about uploading my entire archive, except for those that I've listed with Getty for sale, so as not to violate the Terms of Use. I've successfully uploaded around 130GB as of this writing.

The only negative that I'm see is very slow upload. On a connection with 11.9m upload speed, 1.5GB took an hour. Amazon must choke it way down at their end.

I'm undecided if I want to do a few folders per day until I get it all done. I'd prefer to do it over a weekend, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

I've got a 2 external hard drives, one at home and one at work that are in sync. Maybe I'll just put 2016, plus everything new on Amazon and keep the complete physical backup at home.

Anyone else using PRIME for imaging backup?

Hmm, I'm wondering if I access my 8k files with my 4k TV? That could be more convenient than transferring them to a thumb-drive.

I use the Amazon Drive unlimited, which runs $60/year. No file type restrictions. Fairly snappy upload speeds, too. I'll time the next one to give you an idea of speed. Most of my RAW files are uploaded. I currently have 820GB total there.

The PRIME version is not too snappy, at least for the uploads. I'd pay a little more for realistic upload speeds.

Just uploaded a 2.2GB file in 55 minutes from my laptop at home on our home wifi with both of us surfing/emailing. Probably would have been faster from my wired workstation or from the office.

That was using the Amazon Drive app on my MacBook Pro.

I just started a 10GB file from my home workstation on the wired network. We'll see how long that one takes.

UPDATE: 2GB after an hour. About the same speed as the upload from my laptop earlier.

UPDATE 2: The 10GB upload from home last night averaged about 2GB/hr. But this morning I uploaded a 2.8GB file from my office at the university and it took just 5 minutes. Considerable difference. Much of that can be attributed to the nature of the pipes to the internet. My home internet pipe is geared towards downloads. I get 50mb/s down and around 6mb/s up, supposedly, but I don't think it actually maintains that speed over a long run. The pipe at the university is much more balanced as far as up/down speeds and the upload pipe is much more consistent, even though the peak measured speed is similar.

In other words, YMMV.

Very interesting, Mark. That's an incredibly wide variance. My Speedtest shows over 60mb/s down and 6.9 up, both at home and work. I think that Amazon is choking the uploads somehow, but they won't answer questions about how to improve upload speed.

But what kind of speeds do you guys have from your provider? If you upload speed is low, then it doesn't matter what the other side can receive.

I get like 6-7mb/s from my provider. The upload at my office at the university is about the same. But as we learned here at the university a few weeks ago, anyone upstream from you can be throttling your traffic. Our uploads to our media hosting company would slow to a crawl every afternoon for some reason. We knew where it started to slow down, but no one would fess up to throttling. Then the courts ruled that no provider could throttle traffic (net neutrality) even though appeals to that ruling were pending. The next day our slowdowns disappeared. Someone was throttling our traffic and just wouldn't admit to it.

AT 2PM CST, I started a 12GB upload from the office. We'll see how long that takes. 10GB from home was about 5 hours last night.

So 50 minutes to upload a file that was a little over 12GB (12.14 to be exact). So it really does seem to depend on the network you use. I can't see that Amazon is doing any throttling, unless they distinguish incoming traffic as private network vs commercial vs educational. More likely it's the providers themselves using bandwidth load-sharing protocols to keep some users from hogging all the bandwidth.

Hey Mark! Glad to see you're still here.

I'm in the twin cities now, enjoying my job, built a new home. Also, I have a new member in the family and he's almost 1 yr old already!

Other than that, I guess just busy. I wish I could say I found some new hobbies, but that's not it... I guess just a lot of moving, work related stuff, etc. Sadly, I haven't even found time to do much shooting. I did, however, take my camera with me on vacation to Hawaii a year ago.

The local airport is bringing back an airshow on the 27th, and then we're heading to the UK for 2 weeks just after that. So my rigs should get plenty of work over the next month or so.

I have the MkI version of that lens. It's pretty nice, but not nearly as sharp as the MkII. I just don't use it enough to justify selling it and buying the MkII though.
