It might have had oil pressure issues before, he didn't really drive it at all. Maybe there's something in the pickup. I don't think he took the oil pan off just the timing cover.
Ironically on my commute home tonight, the 2 door Maserati that was in the parking lot of mechanic shop for a long time, has now moved from the parking lot to the field in the back to rot away. I'm not going to go and ask about it either. |

No he just did the vanos actuators and the timing chain service. Well .. just.. Quite a job. He said you can't get the valve cover gasket and even the oil pan gasket, so they would stay. The timing chain job had the oil pump sprocket off but that was it.
It looked like the light came on during the very first pull, and he probably never did one before because the check engine light. I'm pretty sure that had it in limp mode, and either way you wouldn't go beating on a newly acquired car like this one until you had the lights fixed and everything running pretty good. |

Brutal indeed. Gutted for him. Sreten, if you read this... Oil pressure is caused by resistance to flow, so high oil pressure can actually indicate a problem. That said, I don't know that blocking one rod bearing would have caused a noticeable increase in pressure. I think it's pretty impressive that despite it's obvious crappiness, the engine did last 190k miles. The S65 would have trouble reaching that...
Looking forward to more E39 content coming up! |

I disagree with this...why do you think s65 would have trouble reaching that? Infact even himself thinks s65 is far more serviceable than this engine. |

Because it's well known that the S65 eats it's rod/main bearings well before that mileage. I don't disagree about the serviceability. I just think the Maserarri engine deserves some credit even though it's a mess of wiring/plumbing and has some really basic elements.

He's probably really screwed on this one. That engine is in a small number of cars. The two door one nearby here is a totally different engine of course.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferr...e#Applications Gutentight on the bed plate and drive it into the river is all I think can be done, no parts, no factory manual, and really unlikely to find the correct used one at any kind of reasonable price. Hopefully a friendly subscriber has one. |
