That's what she said
Wait, whut???? Ya'll are WAY better in the memory department than I, and I'm certainly a junior member of the club. I have no idea who my teachers were in most grades. I can see faces, but no names.

I still have a machine that has a program that only communicates via IPX/SPX and Novell netware client. History, but what for.

Was reading a Doc on the Most bus as used pre 2003 -2018 on many BMWs I think you’d appreciate the networking on that, kinda Token ring mixed with a bit of Ethernet and small MTUs .Some ISO as well over late 90s fibre transport ( 25 Mbps rather than 34 Mbps though ) These days building networks with multiple 100 Gbit wavelengths over Dense fibre. Yet remember telephone acoustic couplers ( 120 baud ) Feeling old… time for a cuppa and a nap. |

The date on the IBM letter 10/24/1962 shows that it was written right smack in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis 10/16 - 10/28 1962. With the possible exception of today, the craziest and scariest time in this country. Nikita, Fidel and JFK were engaged in a game of Quien es Mas Macho with the whole damn country in a near panic thinking that the missile's were going to fly at any moment. Bomb shelters were going in everywhere. Thank God we never needed them. Actually they were pointless anyway in a large metropolitan area as the only logical action would have been to bend over and kiss your ass goodbye. Ruskie nukes in those days were crazy powerful.
I live in Miami and all of a sudden there was so much Army rolling into the area that it looked like a second D Day minus the ships. The rural area south of us all the way down into the Keys was turned into dozens of Nike missile bases all pointed south at Cuba. If you even drove down into the area you were descended upon by very surly soldiers with no sense of humor. A couple of friends and I were once held in detention and threatened for a couple of hours before they turned us over to the local LEO's. They turned us loose and told us to stay on the main roads, and away from the bases, or the next time they would let the Army keep us. Crazy days.

Finished up my OSUT (One Station Unit Training) at Ft. Knox 46 years ago today. I was never again in such good physical condition. That was one hell of a summer. While the rest of my high school class was enjoying their "senior summer," I was crawling around in the red mud of Ft. Knox. Seems like a century ago.

24 years later when I retired (1999), I was 155lb but by 2021 I had ballooned to 175lb and that was the trigger. Started snowshoeing for an hour every day in the Winter and biked for an hour 6 days a week during the Summer and it took me back to 155 but according to my last medical I'm down to 5"6"... |

Yes we're gonna have a wingding A summer smoker underground It's just a dugout that my dad built In case the reds decide to push the button down We've got provisions and lots of beer The key word is survival on the new frontier Introduce me to that big blonde She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld She's wearing Ambush and a French twist She's got us wild and she can tell She loves to limbo, that much is clear She's got the right dynamic for the new frontier Well I can't wait till I move to the city Till I finally make up my mind To learn design and study overseas Do you have a steady boyfriend Cause honey I've been watching you I hear you're mad about Brubeck I like your eyes I like him too He's an artist, a pioneer We've got to have some music on the new frontier Well I can't wait till I move to the city Till I finally make up my mind To learn design and study overseas Let's pretend that it's the real thing And stay together all night long And when I really get to know you We'll open up the doors and climb into the dawn Confess your passion, your secret fear Prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier

An excellent choice of music for the new frontier. People would be shocked to know just how many times we came within minutes of "The Big One" over the years of the Cold War. I myself was personally involved in one incident in April of 1969 that literally came within minutes of execution by the U.S., and was called off only by a phone call by President Nixon. Weapons were loaded; targets were assigned; aircraft were turned up and ready for launch. USS Enterprise CVAN 65 (she will always be my boat, may she rest in peace). The point is that it has been blind luck over the years that has kept any one of dozens or possibly hundreds of such "incidents" from escalating, and launching all of us into the New Frontier.
As for the "Dan". They have always been one of my top favorite groups over the years. Incredible innovation in the blending of Rock; Pop and Jazz, and the lyrics.. amazing. Mostly written by Donald Fagen, but he and Walter Becker (RIP) had a special skill in finding just the right sidemen, and using them in just the right places to create musical masterpieces. I have every one of their albums, both as Steely Dan, and later as Fagen solos, and listen to them frequently. In fact only last night I was re watching their live concert in NYC recorded in 2000 for probably the fiftieth time. Their music always picks me up when I reach the ragged edge.

...when you automatically assume that when working with 12V DC wiring, it is a given that the red wire is always positive and the black wire is always negative.
Every 12V DC automotive accessory that I've handled recently has a black wire as positive, and a white wire as negative. What the frack!?!?!?

...when using a magnifying glass and a head lamp and you still can't thread the needle. (Just happened... needed to sew on a missing button).

Seeing the eye of the needle is one thing. Holding your hand still enough to thread it is another.

You know you're old when you think you're still 40; then your wife takes a picture of some 58-year-old fart resting instead of paddling the kayak.
