I don't think that this OTA map update is a matter of technicalities with past Nav systems. I do think that no Nav system other than the NBT Evo will offer the OTA just because BMW simply do not offer anything for free as a retrofit for past generations. Nothing. And $250 for a map update per car is kind of difficult to pass when you multiply that by tens of thousands of old cars.

I will be very very very surprised if BMW makes the free map updates available to the current/older systems. Seeing all the recent changes that BMW has announced/planned to make, I see very very low possibility that BMW would decide to give all the current owners map updates for free.

From Nav Screen, hit the iDrive Controller Option Button and display Navigation version. If it shows EVO Map, then you have NBT2 EVO Head Unit.

Maybe you can clarify, as a poster a few posts back insists that MY16 F34 does not get OTA updates. Yet, I've seen an MY16 F34 with Nav System Version: 2015-3, NBTevo_D15182l.

Then could one have NBT EVO, but not OTA updates?

Sure! The technology is there, but simply is not made available by BMW to us customers in every country

Your ConnectedDrive system will always connect only to the "right" server (i.e. the one BMW keeps your account on); if the server is configured to not broadcast free OTA updates, you're hosed. So as an example: since it doesn't work for Poland (yet), I cannot change to the relatively close German server and cheat the system...Not from my car's iDrive system; not even from my home PC!

And to add to what moldcad wrote, the OTA Map Update is a subscription service, normally Free for 3 years, but not always. No subscription of course means no updates.

...but starting with post #46 in this thread, you indicated that "Any car with NBT2 EVO Head Unit" gets OTA updates ("this feature"). Also, "If it shows EVO Map, then you have NBT2 EVO Head Unit." Thus my confusion.

Because for the U.S., which was the context of the post, all cars with NBT2 EVO come with Free 3 -Year Subscription.

And are you sure you saw F34 with NBT2 Evo? Since it did not recive LCI Treatment, I would expect it to have NBT NEXT map not EVO.

The "evo" leads me to think NBT2 EVO. Maybe not.

FWIW, a supporter on another forum thinks all MY16 "F3x" get OTA updates.
