Lol. I want the power, but it needs to be usable. Even if I had all the money in the world, I couldn't justify having more than one car. Now because of kids and dogs we need two, kinda. We could manage with the Audi only but I'd be on meds.

No. I don't think they are all that good looking, certainly not the older ones.
The new ones are nice, but when the day comes to upgrade from the M3 class, then an Aventador or something absurd is what I would aspire towards.

I respect the Porsches a lot, they just don't do anything for me personally.

No dude, I don't judge others with the same standards I hold myself to. I buy what I like, and drive it everywhere. The guys in my section of the forum talk about leather wearing badly, mine doesn't have a scratch on it after a year of bad jeans, dogs, kids, frogs, homeless in my car, furniture transporting and naturally coffee.


I fucking love the damn car, but anything more impractical and I'd be in an Audi again.

Currently have 3, but if Avalon needs new timing belt, I am just going to sell it with disclose info , and stay with 2. It is not worth dropping ~$800+ for a car which is worth 1200 w/ little front damage. lol.

I thought about leasing a cheap Corolla or Camry at 79/mo ish, and trade the Avalon. $79+tax is like 2 day compact rental car price. However, I don't want to drop $3000-3500 for a 2 year lease.

...so, I have the Jetta TDi for a daily driver, a Truck for farm 5hit, and the vert E93 M. Just got the Mrs. a Touareg TDi....

4 cars, 2 people...

Granted, the truck is a '07 has long been debt free and only see's 3k to 4k per year, with only 40k on the clock.

I drive the 5hit out of the Jetta - '11 with 80k on the clock...but it is also debt free.

I basically owe on the ///M what I would have paid on a brand new Honda Civic.

The Touareg was a great deal - and replaces a payment we already have...

Best part - all 'my' cars are 6MT

Let me put it a different way: given that there is not much performance difference between a similar aged 911 (the 997) and an E92 M3 (I've driven both back to back).
Imagine then if you built a 997 chassis into a E92 M3 chassis (to produce a car that looked identical to a BMW M3 but drove like a 997) and asked a group of people to drive it in a blind test against a normal E92 M3...I'd suggest the majority of drivers would prefer the way the M3 drove overall...its an easier, more forgiving, more fun car to drive.
When you buy a Porsche, you are buying into a brand and you pay for that as much as the driving experience.
It is an iconic and desirable car though ...in the UK its one of the few cars in its class that you can own without people thinking you are a nobhead.

Amid the "991s" and "911s" I think I got dyslexic and lost track of things as I was trying to make sense of the darn names/numbers, to say nothing of there having been firmly stuck in my head the sophistry (re: Porsche at least) that a car designated "991" should predate one noted as "997."

I did the same event as the OP on Friday morning.

There were 3 E92 M3s in the parking lot if that gives you a sense. If not Porsche envy, there is at least a healthy dose of Porsche interest in the M community.

I think the 911 is the best 4 seat sports car out there. I don't like the engine placement and I do not think it is a pretty shape, but if I could afford one I'd own one. 400/500 lbs lighter than the M3 and with better brakes, what more could one ask for?

I was personally beyond impressed with the Cayman GTS. To me it was a totally different animal than the Cayman S (I think the fixed sports suspension might play a big role). I didn't feel the same when comparing the 911S to the GTS. I bet that GT4 is really special if its a GTS turned up to 11....

Final notes - the Panamera GTS with the all motor V8 sounds amazing, especially next to the turbo 6 (which sounds the opposite of amazing), and it took more than an hour for the pit in my stomach from the Panny Turbo launch control pit exit to dissipate. I almost booted in a track-side trashcan after the instructor driven hot lap.

Great that Porsche invests the money in this...

I haven't driven an E9x M3 but I've driven a few 911s (old and new) very hard and I don't see how anything could be easier to drive on the limit. You can make those cars do anything, first RWD performance car I drove was a 911 and it was no problem sliding it around.

I think the rear engine and short wheel base scare people into thinking that 911s are blood-thirsty animals, but get into one and push it and you'll understand why the 911 is the benchmark for sports cars. It's not because of the raw performance numbers. The user who traded his 997 turbo in for a M3 made the mistake of buying an AWD car and expecting it to be tossable. The C2S and GTS (and obviously the GT3) are are the real drivers cars in the 911 lineup.

Don't get me wrong, I love the E92, I have owned one since new. And it turned heads in 12/06, imagine that?

But the car is not comparable to a 911, 997 or 991, it simply is not....

Have forever wanted a 911 it had always been a dream. I learned how to drive stick on my Dad's 944 back in the day.. So when I was finally able to buy one.. I went looking

I was widowed in 2013 and finally received a healthy insurance settlement.. I figured I'm spoiling myself.. After raising 4 kids.. Why not

I test drove about 10 different 911s of various years and just one 2013 E92 M3... The dealer actually suggested it..

I ended up buying the E92.. The 911 was great.. But I have a new dream car.. And it's all mine!

Ah....the 944.....I get my Nissan serviced at a German auto place, and it's mostly Porsche, VW, Audi, some BMW. The owner told me to feel free to look around the garage. He had a 996 GT3, but I went straight to this 86'ish 944 Turbo. I told him I would gladly drive that daily (had the standard phone dial rims, not the forged aluminum). He told me you don't want that, if you had that you better get another car as a backup.

But I really do like 944's. Wife's cousin's ex restored 2 of them.....

I'm only talking about the driving experience, I owned eight 911s over 20 years, driven them on track days and most recently had a 997S gen 2 PDK for a day. I love them and will have another soon enough. But:
A 911 has a lot of weight in the back and as brilliant a job Porsche have done in masking that inherent unbalance the physics will always get you if push too far. Get the rear out too much especially in the wet and you will be making a 911 shaped hole in the scenery as you exit the road backwards.
If you are Chris Harris then all well and good - for most drivers, staying within the normal limits of a 911 is advisable.
The E9x M3 OTOH is eminently chuckable, its a car that is very stable and easy to drive at the limit and beyond...it flatters the average driver where the 911 does not.
Driven really hard, you get to your destination in an M3 thinking what a great fun drive that was...in a 911 you get there rather moist in the armpit area thinking wow I'm still alive....a different kind of satisfaction.

When I went to Vegas for my B-day a few years ago, the only present I wanted was a few laps from Exotics Racing. I picked the 911 because we were on the inside road track, not the oval.
"But, you could have the Ferarri, or Lambo"
"Nope, for fun in the corners, 911 is my choice."

There was about a 20 minute orientation before we went out on the track. Very basic info on corners, overview of the track rules, etc. Then the instructor asked who was driving the 911. I was the only one who raised his hand, and he gave me the thumbs up. No other car choices were asked. . .

I think, if you're intersted in driving - performance driving, then you kind of have to own a 911 at some point. Or, you at lease have to spend enough time behind the wheel doing serious driving, to know it's not for you.

Since I've never driven one, I kind of have to own one at one point, just to know... It probably won't be anything crazy - probably a base-ish car with a naturally-aspirated motor and a 3-pedal manual transmission. And I honestly don't think they're that good looking - I go back and fourth on the Porsche/911 looks - a love/hate kind of thing... And while I respect the crap out of what the cars are, when I see them, watch videos and such, I always get this dry taste and feeling in my mouth, and while I'm wowed by them, I'm also kind of bored at the same time. I don't know how to explain it, really..

But I have to know... At some point, I just have to own one...
