Maybe it's because I'm too young but I don't care for any of those '90s Japanese sports cars. They all look like jelly beans to me. RX7 was probably the best looking of the bunch.
The NSX aged better due to its angular design, but I still think it looks awkward as hell next to other sports cars of the day. European cars truly take a dump on everything else, even to this day. |

Hell, Ferrari even acknowledged that removing the engine for an oil change might be a little stupid. |

Btw I wasn't attacking the Japanese performance and value credentials, just the styling. |

I agree. All of those are awful. I admit to terrorizing Japanese cars with my mom's SL500, but it was still ugly.
I didn't like 911's until we hit the 993. The F355 was mighty similar to the 348, but it's still one of my favorite designs. Just in terms of what was out when the NSX arrived, it was more competitive than a lot of people remember. It stayed around for WAY too long and looked stupid compared to the competition by the time it finally disappeared. But right at first... |

Ugly cars, such as Japanese sports cars from the 90s and others
Very few cars in this thread are actually ugly. The AMC of course being one of them , albeit neither from the 80's or 90's.

I actually lusted after the Matador. Then again, my tastes are suspect. I love the Aztek my GF owned. Great car, lots of room, drove nice. I also loved the Pinto my GF had in the late 70's, then her Vega after she wrecked the Pinto.

I agree, the 90s were a low point for the Germans. The Japanese had far superior designs and reliability at that point. The Germans learned a lot from the Japanese design in the 90s and refined their cars. They were much better in the 2000s and beyond. The 1990s was the hey day of Japanese sports cars. Most of their offerings today are disappointing and too pricey.

I was shopping for a "toy" around $20,000 and Japan has zero to offer me besides heavily modifying something I wasn't going to enjoy driving off the track. I haven't been able to convince most of my 'jdm' buddies that the 135i is a really viable tuner option now that they're so cheap, but maybe some time in the future.

I think the only Japanese cars today that are remotely close to affordable enthusiast cars are the 86 cars, the Miata, WRX and Civic Type R but none of those have the refinement if you want to drive them every day.

The CTR is also surprisingly civilized, if you don't ever look at it. You're correct about the others. |

CTR was good. I liked how it drove behind the wheel. But yeah, not something I'd want to be driving on daily basis.

Periscope Countaches are still awesome, but the final run looks like a 56 year old lady with tons of plastic surgery still trying to convince people she's 24.
