Genesis GV70. The look, interior design and high-tech electronics appeal to young people.

Alpine300ZHP's comment about young lawyers also prompts me to think -- does your daughter have to be a little careful about driving something a bit too ostentatious for a young lawyer? I suspect that appearances can matter in a law firm. To take an extreme example, even if her family has the resources, she likely wouldn't want to show up for work in a new Ferrari convertible. Or am I too old school here? Perhaps anything she can get for 50K is safe on that front.

And I'm interested in what MK thinks so far... update?

...I personally couldn't give my kids a $50K car for graduation, largely because I feel like it creates a situation where the next car will need to be nicer/better thus they'll be wanting a $70-90K when they're not even 30. I feel like you need to put in the time and effort to get the high-end stuff and you can't get it from the start. Just like a job, you work your way up to a nice car, house, etc.
I was given a new 300zx when I graduated college and got into dental school. After a year I told my parents I didn't need such a nice car in Boston and sold it and gave them back the money, even though the car was a gift. They did buy me another car after my second year in dental school. It was a used Taurus SHO that had a salvage title that lasted me a few years and I sold for the same amount. I also gave my parents back the money.

Not all of us expect a more expensive car later on given to us by our parents.

Lots of excellent suggestions so far: brand new 330i or GV70 or IS350. All of them available no doubt in black.

Unfortunately, I already sold my excellent Turbodiesel earlier this year. Easiest vehicle to pick out in a parking lot that I've ever owned. Outstanding room -- perfect for when the office wants to go to lunch and needs to decide who's going to drive. Unfortunately, impossible to drive into a parking garage and through a drive-thru. Plus, it was not black and was 18 years old. Trade-off, trade-offs...

You are right. I guess you just caught me off guard.

Actually, the other guy's post did too.

Everybody does 'parenting' their own way. Best not to interfere.

I'd do this. Take her to test drive a few cars that make sense and let her decide. CPO always a good shout.

Sure, there a rare cases, but let's be realistic here. As most people get older and have more money (or less sense), they upgrade their cars, homes, clothes, etc. It's hard to go backwards when you've had the nice stuff.

I am all for giving your children and family a leg up where possible, but I also think it's important that they understand the value of money, have strong work ethic, that there is no such thing as a "free lunch", understand that you have to wait and earn the nice stuff, etc. We all know people that have had a pretty damn easy life and have no respect of others and/or what they have. I'll also caveat this that I know absolutely nothing about the OP's daughter other than what he's posted and his daughter could very well have all of the positive traits I noted and expects absolutely nothing from him.

And this may be why he feeling so giving at the moment. Serious medical emergencies, near death experiences, etc. often led people to make rash, weird, out of character, etc. decisions shortly after the event. It's pretty common. Most docs would tell you to rest, reflect, and not make big decisions during this time.

I bought my daughter a '66 Mustang when she was 17 as her first car.

She's 40 now and a great kid and a very responsible person. Works hard for everything she has.

I love her dearly and we are best friends.

Fathers and daughters.

My kids have six years to go until it's time for them to get cars. One will get my wife's 2016 E300, the other will get a comparable used car.

Given that you can afford to out-right buy her a $50K car for a college graduation present and will give her a down payment on a home at some point, I would assume that she has no college debt as well? If my assumption is correct, that alone is a MASSIVE step ahead compared to the vast majority coming out of school, especially law school. It's also one hell of a graduation present.

Rather than making her life pretty easy with a number of free cars, no college loans, and an eventual home down payment, perhaps an alternative choice could be to give her a $50K check and give her investment advice on what where she could invest it and perhaps spend a bit on a new car if she really needs a new car. By doing that, she has some control rather than getting another thing handed to her/given to her and she bares some responsibility and has control.

Assuming that she's going into law practice, her job will be incredibly hard for the next 2 to 5 years as an associate at firm. It's meat grinder and like being in a young doctor in residency. She will have little time for much of anything. But she'll be making good money from the start. Maybe then, she could get the car she wants with own money.

My son is going to college next year. He won't have loans because he worked his tail off in HS to graduate with 30 hours of college credit, will get some scholarships, and we've set aside enough to cover the remainder. His first and only car was pristine hand me down 2015 Outback 3.6R which he has taken great care of for two years. My 14 y/o daughter said she wants the Outback badly and he said he wants something sporty like a used Mazda 3, Civic Si, or BRZ/GT86 once he graduates college. My plan is to "loan" him $20K next year and he'll give the Outback to his sister. My loan to him will be with no interest and the monthly payments low. The loan will be forgiven when he graduates. His college graduation present will be a Vanguard account and $10K invested in S&P500 index funds and some bonds. I'm all for giving kids help if you can afford it, but I also strongly feel that they need to bare some responsibility and have to demonstrate strong work and personal ethic regardless of how wealthy the household is.

I personally couldn't give my kids a $50K car for graduation, largely because I feel like it creates a situation where the next car will need to be nicer/better thus they'll be wanting a $70-90K when they're not even 30. Great input and feedback.

Let me give you some more background. All of the financial suggestions you mentioned have been handled. Everything and a few more you neglected to mention.

Let mew tell you about my daughter and her character. Some may sound trite but it means a lot to me. She has only kinda put her foot wrong once in life now that I think about it. Under age drinking on Bourbon street and the DA piled on every additional charge he could think of until she nearly threw up. She had to pay a fine and it was expunged when she made 21. When she was a debutante, which is a group of bratty, overindulged pit-vipers, she was voted everyone's fav. They all hate each other. When she wanted job experience in the legal field, she got a job on the governor's staff. When I asked her if she wanted me to make a few calls in advance to grease the skids, she refused all familial help and got the job on her own beating out hundreds of candidates. When she was in HS, parent after parent would come to me and tell how they loved seeing her at after hours school events because they knew someone with a level head was there. Additionally, as an 10th grader, she had to be made to leave the retirement home for her community service hours because she loved helping the elderly ladies with their nails so much. Her principal reported this to us in a meeting. Early in her schooling she struggled academically which can be a real downer in my family on one's confidence, she was depressed about her own academic prowess until the 2nd semester of her 10th grade year She made almost all straight A's thereafter, did well on college boards, graduated summa cum laude with the 2nd highest GPA in her department and is 7 months from completing law school.
I rarely use the word deserve when referring to human endeavors but I will use it here. My parents would and have offered to purchase a new car for her multiple times and she demurred each time. Even today, after my follow-up appointments, I asked her about the car and she stated that she only wants the latest year diesel BMW makes, nothing more.

She is a good kid that just happens to be my daughter and my best friend.

21 is absurd anyways, just insane. It's 18 back home and we do just fine. They can put a tin hat on your head and force you to run up a machine gun laden beach but heaven forbid you have a beer.

Why beat around the bush? Seems that she is a simple person who does not need flashy cars to make her happy. Plus she is offering you advice, that none of us could ever offer you, especially seeing as she has turned down other offers. Take her with you, and let her choose, seeing as BMW quit selling diesels here in the U.S.

It's such a nice looking car, the front end especially. I'd take it over a G80 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
