Got 3 to share. The last one kind of countsss...the sun was setting enough! The sun was just beginning to rise in the 2nd picture after a night out for taking pictures of the Perseid meteor shower.
1) 2) 3)

I'm hoping to get a good one, drive up to 10k elevation and get the Milky Way shot with 17mm. Any suggestions for settings?

How long an exposure you can tolerate without star trailing depends on the focal length of your lens and what corner of the sky you're shooting. I usually find that I can get away with 20-25s with a 24mm lens, but no more than 4-5s with a 135 (proportional to 1/f for other focal lengths). Again though this depends on where in the sky you're shooting. Near the North Star (or Southern Cross for our Aussie brethren) the proper motion of the star field is less and you can get away with longer exposures. For examples check out the EXIF info on this series from about a year ago: http://www.pbase.com/fvachss/australian_nightscapes Last edited by vachss; 07-16-2011 at 06:21 PM.. |

21 degrees and it will be with a Canon EF-S 17mm F2.8 lens on a cropped body. I figured out that I should be able to get something up to about 30 seconds without too much in trails. If there is anything good I might try for 420mm+ crop or 100mm + crop.
Do you think 17mm crop lens on a crop body, wide open(2.8) and 800-1600/3200 ISO will get me the Milky Way?

Thanks a lot!
1) Shot with Canon 1D III with Canon 16-35mm on it at 16mm, f/2.8, ISO 400, and 1/125. Hand held. 2) Shot with Nikon D2X with Nikon 10.5mm fisheye on it at 10.5mm, f/2.8, ISO 400, and 30 seconds. Rested the camera on top of the car haha (I miss my '95 525i) with shutter release. 3) Shot with Canon 1D IV with Canon 200mm on it at 200mm, f/5.6, ISO 100, and 1/1250. Used a tripod and shutter release.

You'll be close enough with that exposure to base further adjustments on your initial results. If you're up high on a dark night with a clear sky I would think that 17mm/f2.8/30s/ISO1600-3200 should give a good Milky Way rendition. If it's not full dark (i.e. if there's any moon or other source of light in the sky) then this exposure will tend to give an overbright sky back ground and it will be more difficult to see the Milky Way. So either shoot on a new moon night or wait for at least an hour after moonset (or stop an hour before moonrise).

Crap, the moon will be up all night long but at least I'll be at 10K feet.
Thanks for that insight.

I'm surprised no one stole the camera while you ran back and forth. Gotta be careful to leave it like that...
