We had daily milk delivery, 2 brown bottles from a local dairy. I loved the stuff and could down them both in a single day. To this day I blame McArthur Dairy for my cholesterol issues. The best was Saturday morning when a box of fresh baked Krispy Kreme doughnuts was included.

When I joined the Navy I continued with my milk consumption, though not as much. This came to a screeching halt when I went aboard ship, and I have never consumed milk in any form (other than ice cream) since. Once the ship is about 3 or 4 days out at sea all the whole fresh milk has been consumed, and they break out the powdered milk. This stuff is truly the Devils work, and is undrinkable. They also made ice cream from it which was also foul. I remain traumatized to this day.

There's a small regional dairy here that still sells milk in glass bottles at many grocery stores. Before anyone asks, there's a $3.00 deposit on each one so I can't pass along our empties.....

We had milk delivery from a local diary as well. Glass bottles sitting in a wire basket of sorts. I can still hear the jingle as the deliver guy walked up to our front porch. In fact, it was the owner of the diary. The milk was not homogenized, so we could scoop the cream off the top. The diary owner was a good friend of my dad's and fellow pilot. The owner said running the diary was darned hard work, and I believe it.

Never had milk delivery. That's what we had in stores back in 60-70's.

My dad hired me as the store janitor for his mom-and-pop radio/TV store in 1964. I was a junior in high school, so I worked a couple of hours each day after school. Dad made me a deal; clean the store properly and if there's any time left before closing, he'd teach me basic electronics in his repair shop. I got a lot of practical experience including table radios and car radios, with vacuum tubes. The old car radios sometimes came in two pieces with the out of sight piece containing a vibrator (heh!).

As the years went by I saw radios with pushbuttons and the so-called Wonder Bar that would seek out the next radio station. It was pretty cool, I thought. Also tricky to repair.

Having said that, I don't miss those days of lying on my back on someone's dirty car floor with cigarette ashes falling in my face as I tried to wiggle the radio out of the dashboard.

You know you're old if...

You owned a car that had a 6 volt starter battery.

And/or a starter pedal on the floor beside the gas pedal.

Ha, well...

To be clear, those radio vibrators came in 3 or 4 pin versions, each available in 6 volts or 12 volts. You did not want to operate those old car radios very long with the engine off - they could kill a battery pretty quickly. On the plus side, those old tube radios doubled as the car heater.

My transition came when we moved to the Philippines when I was 17. The on base milk came in a carton but was reconstituted from powdered. I started eating breakfast cereal in a bowl with water replacing milk. I think it put me off milk permanently.

For the older U.S. military veterans among us, remember the occasional unpleasantness at airports when traveling in uniform during the old days? Here's a T shirt that expresses the resulting sentiment.

(I would never personally wear a shirt like this, but I certainly sympathize with the message.)

The intended audience for this shirt is very widely dispersed in the general population these days resulting in very few intended insults per random wandering. For maximum impact and pleasure you need to wear this where those ass holes are likely to congregate.

A perfect target rich environment comes to mind and, I just might buy one and wear it proudly myself. The next high school reunion of the class of 1960 -something. Guaranteed mass offense among the crowd. It would be like tossing a hand grenade, though I bet not one of them would confront you. Well, maybe a Karen or two if you're lucky. Best reunion ever!

Grandpa was a diary farmer. Still drinking whole milk these days. Mom used to want for a cow in the backyard, since she regularly (every 2-3 days) made a trip to market to buy 3-4 gallons when all 4 of us boys were growing up.

Fed my youngest goat milk (is for kids) when his momma ran out. Could never bring myself to even try it. He reminisces that he used to enjoy milk when he lived at home, but now that he's on his own he drinks water. . .

When the wife/I go out with her sister/husband for dinner, they are all searching around for their "cheese pills" while I'm digging in to secure more than my fair share of the cheese horse doovers. "Don't you want a cheese pill?" pishahhhh

I was drinking 1% for many years, but then switched to unsweetened almond milk. Pretty close in taste and way fewer calories. I also have chocolate almond milk as a pre-workout drink. I use oatmilk for my cereal and coffee.

Wow! You guys are going to make me switch back to FULL FAT whole milk just to offset all of this other stuff!! Just a quick little thought on almond milk for anyone drinking it. Are you aware that growing almonds requires an ungodly amount of water and a very large percentage of them are grown in California? If there’s one thing California doesn’t need it’s to be using tons of water on almonds.

Is that any more eco-unfriendly than dairy farming? At some point you have to set your "footprint" or you'll starve to death.

The big thing now is to stop counting calories and start avoiding as much ultra-processed food as possible. Then you find out that the definition of "ultra-processed" fits a hell of a lot of food we eat. Even stuff that is supposed to be healthy, like almond milk.

I’d have to look into that, but off the top of my head I think it probably is, because it also takes an ungodly amount of almonds to get an equivalent amount of “milk” that you get from cows. Of course, cows are worse for the planet than cars with all their farting!
