BINGO we have a winner! I just went a did a few longer exposure (1sec-60sec) test shots with the lens cap on and I could see the hot spots. Sucks but now I know to look out for it in PP.

Yep it's from a passing boat and the long exposure does smooth the wake but it passed by at very low speeds. I purposely put another sig

BTW the good thing about lightning is that it is pure light...with shutter speeds from 1/60 (which you would have to be the luckiest person on earth to catch at that speed) on down you will never underexpose the strike itself...the longer shutter speed is more to make sure you catch something and help get the clouds to be exposed somewhat. I have an even better picture i will post in the next couple days.

i'm not a photographer by any means but the lightnings are easy to get.. i used to work in the airport and there was a massive thunderstorm and all planes were left on the ground. me as a ramp agent (the guy responsible for the plane to get unloaded/loaded etc.) i was stuck there with it. so i decided to take some pics. i noticed that you could see a light between the clouds and a few seconds lated the thunder struck. so i counted the seconds and took pics. i eventually managed to take several lighning pics with my motorola v3i mobile phone. ofcourse not as great as your shot )great shot btw) but pics of the lightning nonetheless. i'll see if i can find them on my hard disk (long time ago)
