There's probably several 'movies' in this thread that we've seen before. We're old, we get excused if it's a repeat.

Well dad, being somewhat of a prankster, would stuff the end of the towel

hear a lot of expletives. 🤣

When I went away to college the only phone I really had access to was the pay phone at the end of the hall in the dorm. I’d place a collect call to my folks who would refuse the call and then call back.😎👍🏼

I called home from Korea on my first tour there in '77. It was painful. Had to travel to Seoul to the main Army base. You sat in a booth and an operator placed your call. It took several seconds for your voice to reach the other person and vice versa, so it wasn't a lively conversation.

Calling home from Germany in the 80's was a little better. It was clearer and faster, but man, it was pricey. 5DM (about $2) would get you maybe 10 minutes.

You know you're old when you can still do the crazy things you used to do when you were younger...but no longer want to. Old is in the mind as much as it's in the body, sometimes more.

I tried to call home from Germany, Christmas of ‘68. Stood in line for two
hours for a 2 minute call. After the operator worked hard to put the
connection through to California I heard my sweetie on the other end.
We chatted on the scratchy connection for maybe 30 seconds, then it
disconnected. Operator tried to reconnect, but not enough time left.

My total calls home from Vietnam during my 12 month tour equaled zero.

We had CBS (2), NBC (4), KTLA (5), ABC (7), KCAL (9), KTTV (11), and KCOP (13) in Los Angeles in the 60s and 70s. 7 TV channels in all.

IIRC, 5 and 6 were Boston and Providence ABC stations, 4 and 10 were NBC, 7 was CBS, 2 and 44 were PBS, WLVI was 56, and WSBK was 38 (Bruins station).

Called my wifey from the PI in '77, '78 & '79 (yup, 2 WESTPACs in 19 months; first was 9 months, second was 8 with a 10 month break in between) and it was $1 per minute. We were newlyweds for the first cruise (with all the time we spent at sea, we had 52 days together our 1st year), so I called when I could.

When I was stationed in Okinawa in the mid '80s, if you wanted to make a call to the U.S., you had to call the operator to schedule the call hours in advance. The time difference made most of the call happen in the middle of the night on my end. When your time finally came, the operator would place the call. There was still a delay of a second or so, so it was a lot of starting to talk on both ends and then waiting to see who would continue the conversation.
