Moved out into an apartment with a couple roommates at 23, then several years later moved back in with my mom because Asians take care of our parents when they get old (instead of sticking them in a nursing home). She's nearly retired (and divorced, which is extremely rare among first gen Chinese) and I'm an only child so I have no siblings to help.
The upside is the house is nearly paid for so I don't have a mortgage/rent |

My dad's original plan was to move us all (me, my stepmom, grandma) to Portland, OR, but there were some crazy stuff happening that are stories of their own...
Most prominent reason? My stepmom was very micromanaging AND wanted "rent". At the time, I thought it just meant she was greedy (I mean, my 19 year-old brain couldn't fathom any parent charging their own kid "rent", and nobody in my circles has ever heard of such a thing), and that it was utter BS to still conform to her rules when I can pay only $100 more per month and live in my friend's guest house (with a kitchen and bathroom), and get to do whatever the hell I wanted (especially since I had a misconception that I was not "man enough" and women won't want me if they know I still lived at home)... Took me a few months to realize the real reason they asked for money (my dad was laid off and my mom was only working a minimum wage job), but just phrased it badly, but also it was SO worth the peace and quiet that what I originally had as a one-month experiment turned into a lifelong thing... But by then, my dad and stepmom already moved to Portland, but I decided that since my grandma had dementia and needed round-the-clock care and had no choice but to stay at a nursing facility, I would occasionally visit or help her out until she passed on. My mom tried to move in with me... The full Monty of what went on is somewhere in OT, but it ended badly with her trying to kill a girl I was dating around 2007, and with my dad having passed on in mid-2013, I can't change my mind. so it's me against the world, and hopefully a new significant other that is willing to shack up and share rent with me ...But hope the roommate that I moved in is competent enough to not let me down.

I never left. Started to take care of my parents as they get older.
Although the big portion of the down payment was gifted to me, I pay for everything and prefer it that way, but I'm Vietnamese so we always stay with our parents till they are no longer with us. I'm only 34 and not married, so maybe it isn't a big deal yet |
