My conversation a lot of today has been how the medical field has changed. I have a friend who just called and her Dad had a stroke at the end of July. Both the hospitalist and neuro rehab facility doc agree he would benefit from therapy. The insurance wants to send him to a skilled facility. Denied therapy. He's 61. The hospitalist is doing a peer to peer but told my friend don't get your hopes up. You're smart to find an exit plan. It's just a shame after so many years of education and training that you're ability to practice medicine is ruled by insurances and corporate greed.

I've worked in the IT field for 37 years now...all at the same place. ("IT" wasn't even a coined term when I started.) Helped to build the information dirt road, which later bloomed into the information superhighway. (Before you ask, Al Gore was never in any of our Christmas party group pictures.) I was also the lead/designer for the first at-scale wifi deployment in the world, and had people flying in from as far away as India to see how roaming between floors and buildings worked in real life.

These days, I spend most of my time apologizing for building the Internet that brings us Facebook, Twitter, and all of the other abusive social media bully-pulpit platforms. The rest of my work time is spent on audit trails, access requests, and e-discovery from lawsuits. As I say, my job used to be way more fun before the lawyers and auditors discovered the IT profession!

I'm a VP of Information Technology Services in the healthcare field.

I recently changed jobs (just 3 months ago) - I previously worked for the largest non-profit healthcare system in the U.S. and I agree that healthcare is a mess. I was making ridiculous money but was miserable because I couldn't make a difference for our clients, who were in desperate need of tech investment.

I'm still in healthcare but in a more specialized area: Radiology. It's pretty cool what they're doing from a technology perspective in this space so it's invigorated my motivation a lot. I was more than happy to take a pay cut to join this firm where the morale is so much higher as is the intrinsic satisfaction from my job.

Hence why I left bedside. We both have tons of stories and the amount of unethical care I've seen and heard before and especially through covid, would make anyone sick.

Medicine, hospitals, management, corporate big institutions stink… I left a huge one and I've never been happier. The anxiety and stress is gone, along with the backstabbing and being understaffed as a floor nurse, risking my license along with other RN'S.. let's just say it isn't the same, and it won't change.

When I was sitting on the stage at the FTC conference 15 years ago, it was my first exposure to lobbyists and how they influence the government at all levels. Every single person but me seemed to be there only to sell their single-minded "fix" for the spam problem to the government, and none of them were there to address the actual problem. One person came in to do a presentation on an open-source scheme to combat email forgeries and spam through existing Internet protocols, that I thought had real promise. When the guy went up to the stage to speak, he was wearing a freaking superhero cape and totally destroyed his own credibility! I had a scary conversation with a DoD networks colleague over lunch that I will not share even after 15 years, because all y'all would lose sleep knowing that these people also manage our nation's nuclear weapons inventory.

This whole traveling freak show of lobbyists trying to sell their "fix" was going to Boston for another government hearing a few days after the FTC conference. Several people asked me if I was going to be at that event as well, apparently accepting me into their fold. I'm sure that it was fun, but I was so disenfranchised by the whole scene that I didn't want to be a part of fixing it at the government level after that.

Anyway, let's summarize by saying that I'm not surprised that the spam problem (and now robo-dialers) has not been resolved in over a decade.....

I'm a young Hospitalist. Your sentiments seem par the course for this field. Let's see how long I can make a run at it. If anything this expensive hobby for cars will keep me motivated.
