I thought this was somewhat humorous (especially since you can rent it for a week)...

i would do it if i had enough lenses.
if you can't have fun with things you buy, then what's the point. Anytime someone shows interest in my gear, i'll hand them one of my two cameras and tell them to take a few shots and see how they like it. It's inevitable to get some damage on a lens at some point in it's life, so why worry about it. just go with the flow, and if an opportunity for a game of chess comes up, play it |

For those of you who are professional photogs, or are into video stuff... how do you back up all your stuff? Especially for video editing, capture, etc it seems like you would require a lot of bandwidth, speed, and space. Just curious what your storage schemes are...

Ooh, um, yeah...backups. I started a scheme where I'd plug an external drive into my laptop and back up everything. Let's see, that was January 2010 or so. I should probably do it again, eh?

hehe... the only reason I was wondering, is because we're building this custom high-end backup server for a client (not photography related). I figured most people here are backing up to an external USB drive, or maybe even a NAS, etc.

1TB pocket with all the files and matching on the HD of the desktop.
Out of some 15k photos only ~50 were ever printed

why USB? because it's cheap when you have to buy tons of them and I don't mind setting stuff up for backup while I sleep. don't need the speed/bandwidth. when I'm working, I put the current project (or two or three) on a couple 500GB firewire800 mini drives. and then I can edit anywhere I go.

Gary, do you find it useful to have the lens hood on that lens?

If I were setting up today I'd look for USB 3.0 which is faster than Firewire. DON'T get USB 2.0 if you're going to be dealing in GB and TB. Rodi may have time and patience, but your client will be pissed at the slow performance. Firewire is not common on PC, but a PCI card to add it only costs like 20-bucks. USB 3.0 is still uncommon, but if you're starting from the ground up, then you should look for it, unless the data library size is modest. I forget the specs, but USB 3.0 is incredibly fast. My RAW files are 20 to 30MB each, so it's easy to accumulate several GB per week. Dave
