My city has a great Dutch store that's owned and run by real live Dutch people . They're my key supply link for real aged gouda (hauda, not gooduh lol) and leiden, as well as all of the other dutch stuff from my childhood. I don't know how to spell any of it (I was a little kid) but kook, spekulaas, bitterbollen, croquettes, licorice, etc were staples in my house growing up.

Ha leuk!
The last governor of Dutch new Amsterdam (NYC right now) was born near where I m from ( Heerenveen ). But many dutch settlers at that time (17th century) were from the southern part of the netherlands( now belgium) , hence Hoboken , Antwerp's harbour and also a part of new york... Cheers Robin

Where are poffertjes in this comprehensive list you guys are making...don't see them anywhere??
And I'm not Dutch, just worked there for 2 months. Developed a great appreciation for cheese and bread while there. Plus I didn't know how to work the oven so that generally became my dinner most nights that I ate in...mad dash to the nearest store to pick up cheese, fresh bread, a bottle of wine...mmmm, memories. |

People who use the microwave and instead of waiting for the timer to reach 0, they open it up and take their stuff out without clearing the "PRESS START" prompt on the screen.
For some reason that drives me nuts. |

YES! I could start an entire thread with stuff around the office that drives me nuts but that has to be close to the top.

Some of you guys have some odd pet peeves. One of mine is back when I bothered to look at social media. It drove me nuts what people put up as their profile pictures. A profile picture is supposed to be a picture of YOU, not your kid or pet. It's akin to somehow changing your ID photo.

He changed it at age 16. It's was actually Ralph Lifshitz. And he does pronounce it LORE - en, as you mentioned, with the typical American pronunciation emphasizing the first syllable. Just thought I'd add that for no good reason.

Wow, I thought I was the only one. Anything with acetic acid (vinegar) is repugnant to me. Unfortunately, that can severely limit one's choices in a nice restaurant. I wish I could get past it but it's not going to happen. Ever.
And as mentioned, I always cringe inside when people use good as an adverb. "How are you doing?" "Good." No. However, after living in the South for 10 years, I've just come to accept it. They have a different vernacular and I honestly don't think they teach grammar in the schools down here. Sadly, ain't and fixin to have been added to my vocabulary. Now they do have y'all, which is a great word. I do like using that one. |
