I'm smart. I rode smart. I took riders-ed class and aced it -- twice, for good measure. First time I dropped my bike was six months in, while doing a U-turn at about 3 mph. It happens. And any rider needs to be prepared for the inevitability ... because it's not always you who tips the bike over (Second time for me: At a weekly bike gathering, by someone else dismounting the bike next to mine.)

I remember joking with a buddy of mine who got his first bike which was brand new. I told him the first thing you need to do is to just knock the bike over. Knock the new off of it. After that, you won't be so scared to ride it and you've gotten your first "crash" out of the way. Of course I was joking and we both had a good laugh from it.

The place I bought my bike from said they stopped letting people ride their new bikes off the showroom because people would either lay the bike down or hit other things on their way out the door.

Trying to remember where I picked up both my current bikes bought new. I think after the paperwork was done, my bike was sitting outside in front of the dealer waiting for me. I don't ever recall seeing anyone taking delivery of their bikes from the actual showroom floor.

I actually think it was him slamming on the rear brakes for some reason (who knows why) while leaned over, with consideration for the new tire wax. In the video you see his right foot move quite a bit on that right peg.

Recipe for disaster.

I once used a shop that put PJ1 track bite on new tires. The tires were sticky as hell for the first couple miles. It basically ensured that you were off their property should you dump the bike. It was brilliant.

Got the bike home yesterday (Lucky just as the rain started). Rode it about 40 mins from the seller to my house and it felt pretty solid. It will be a while before I can really use all 600cc but I'm in no rush

Good choice.

I started with a Honda 500r (471cc) and it was far too slow for me to really enjoy it. Coming from an M, I wanted something more exhilarating and with more power on tap. I traded in the 500r for a Daytona 675r a month after I bought it. Haven't looked back. I don't push it hard but I give it some throttle whenever I want a quick rush (same thing I do with my M).

There are pros and cons to starting on either. As long as you respect the bike and understand the consequences, IMO, you can start on anything.

There's a reason why other countries have graduated licensing for motorcycles. Countries that have a way better licensing system than the joke we have here in the States. There's a reason why racers have to graduate up classes. No one jumps on a GP bike as their first time out racing.

There is a limit as to how far that "respect" is going to save your a$$ past a certain displacement sport bike. And if you ride in fear of the bike all the time is it really the right bike for you?

I think while it is a good idea to graduate from tier to tier, it's not a given that someone can't practice restraint. My first bike was the 96 gsxr 750 when it first released, bought an 01 gsxr 1000 after trading the 750 in without ever having an issue on it.

I usually push new riders to something in the 600cc range with a focus on mid range.

If you really have to practice restraint, is it really worth having a bike that you're not even scratching the surface in enjoying its performance potential? I'm not saying being reckless on the road and generally being stupid. But bikes are not like cars. There's such a small margin of error that can get you really messed up. You don't have a protective cage around you if something goes wrong unlike a car.

I've stated before, had I started on a smaller bike and really learned the dynamics of using the bike, I would be a much better rider now and be further along with the track schools I've attended.

And it amazes me how people think 600s are an acceptable beginner's bike. If you look at the track times at various circuits in the US between them and liters, you'll see the times are not that far apart.

Lap times might not differ much but there is a world of difference between a liter bike and 600 supersport when twisting the throttle, you can ring the 600's neck with relative impunity but crack the throttle too far on a liter bike and it will put you on your ass.

I agree that smaller stuff is safer but it's not a death sentence if they go the other way...most accidents on bikes aren't due to power per se, rather bad habits, target fixation, carrying too much speed into a corner etc.

You don't have to tell me the difference between a liter and a 600. I own a liter and a 849 cc V-twin sport bike. I've also ridden a 600 on the track along with another liter on the track. That 600 will still put you on your ass if crack the throttle too much. It's all about where in your throttle pull you get thrown. We're not talking about a 600 cc air cooled V-twin for a cruiser. Just because it's a smaller displacement engine doesn't mean you're not going to get yourself in a world of hurt as fast as a liter. Especially with modern day 600s which are at performance levels of liter bikes a few years ago.

And to your last points....how do you expect someone to learn proper habits if they're too scared to ride the bike the way it's intended?
