So as I was looking about the web for some reviews of various watches, and more info on Panerai in particular, I came across this guy call the Watch Snob. He's got a Miss Manners (Judith Martin) writing style, but I agree with a good many of his opinions. Even so, like a review of anything, one must consider one's own preferences and goals and choose what suits oneself regardless of what one or more reviewers think. The Watch Snob fellow's opinions seem to me to be based more around any given watch's merit as an element of a collection that might eventually be of note as a collection. If that's not something that matters, and one buys what appeals aesthetically, there's no reason to read the Watch Snob's commentary for it's damn near impossible to find a watch these days that won't keep accurate time.

Well, I don't speak the language in which the site for which you provided a link is written, but there is an English version. You might want to try these folks http://store.jrdunn.com/ , but if that fails, and I were committed to buying one, I'd probably just contact them and ask for the phone number of a dealer in the U.S.

Good luck and all the best.

YW. Enjoy your watch. I take it is then indeed less expensive than were you to buy it in Geneva.

That's probably true. To tell time, it, and many other even less costly watches, is good enough for 100% of the world. Nobody buys expensive watches because they think a inexpensive one won't keep good time.

Agreed.

However, most folks don't care what type of watch you wear. I don't. I don't even look at their watch unless it's a nice dive watch. Other than that its (lets worry about something else more important)... lol

I think that's mostly true. I'm half a watch guy, but I don't notice other folks watches unless it's somehow called to my attention. I find people noticing my watch more than I theirs.

I buy "fancy" watches that I have most recently (past 10 years) bought for myself because I like look which is relatively unique if you aren't wearing the most commonly found one, and I like the cache, and I like that they'll have some value when I pass them on.

To be sure, when I'm in the PRC, I make it a point to also by a good copy of the expensive watches that I'd find myself wanting to wear on any old normal day. I buy here in the States. Which I wear depends on where I'm going. Usually I don't have to worry about it, but I do some mentoring and other stuff that takes me into some rough neighborhoods. I'm not there very often, which is in part why when I go, I don't wear expensive things, even if they look expensive.

When I go to some posh event, I wear something authentic. For a couple of them, I don't have much choice as I don't have a cheap copy to wear instead. Probably the biggest reason I wear authentic stuff at events is because invariably there'll be some social climber there who's just dying to call you out, under the auspices of "social banter," on whether your junk is legit. They can banter on with someone else. I'd just as soon not waste my time talking to them at all if that's all they want to talk about at that time and place.

Now that I've written that, it occurs to me that it may be no less risky to wear expensive stuff to fancy events than wearing it in the hood, but at least at most fancy events I attend there's a good deal of security in the immediate area, so it doesn't seem too risky. I'm sure there're scoundrels around who realize an event attended by 300 one-percenters is a better place to mug someone if the only consideration is the reward reaped for taking that risk...I think you understand...One can always find a false sense of security if one but try.

This is why I still wear a $25 calculator watch to fancy events. There's always shallow people who try to call you out and one up you.

To each his own. I know I won't likely have anything to say about his calculator watch.

I would hope my conversational skills are strong enough to not have use a device to spur some chit chat with strangers in such situations. By the same token, I don't think there's anything wrong with doing so. I have what could best be described as a pimp's pinkie ring that I sometimes wear and it's definitely been the spark to some wonderful conversations. Thankfully, the ring only occupied 30 seconds or so of the conversation. If his watch accomplishes the same thing, I don't see anything wrong with it for clearly he's not wearing it for the calculator; his phone no doubt is a better tool for that purpose.

That is for sure true, but certain likes usually preclude others. Once you can aquire ferraris you don't usually hang onto a love of crocs and move on to spendy shoes also.
