Im not quite sure about your opinion.
two hypothetical opinions: 1. BMW should stop calling 4 series 4 series, but instead calling it 3 series coupe. 2. BMW should stop producing coupe version of 3 series, only sedan version. Which one is your actual meaning? |

I don't like it either...but BMW of 2018 is an entirely different company philosophically than BMW of say 1984. All the brands have also become like this; even Porsche. Pretty unfortunate...
SUVs with minimal goals of actual driving dynamics are the primary sales drivers now and have changed the philosophy of most companies. In the 1980s the compact performance sedan was the primary driver of sales for a company like BMW. Times have drastically changed...

Do you remember back in the day when BMW had the 3,5,6 and 7? And now have 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and then all models branching from that. Its just too many models. Thats my point.

They have done a lot right with there cars. I'd like to see them bring back the RWD manuals for the folks that want that sort of driving.

The entire automobile industry of today is completely different from the one of 1984. BMW, like all car makers, has to either adapt or die. In 20 years people will be complaining that the BMW of 2038 is completely different than the one from 2018 and how they've lost their way.

Who determines it's too many models? People are buying them all. Why not produce a vehicle if there is demand? BMW would be foolish not to. If a vehicle is a slow seller, then it'll be removed from the line up.

i personally think it's too many, but i admit that's mainly because i find it annoying and confusing that we find ourselves with series 1 thru 8, X models 1 thru 7, and M versions as well. And then they double down by pulling shit like "well 4 and 6 are for two-door versions of 3 and 5, but we'll make four-door 'grand coupe' versions of them anyway"
With that said, it's a good point that maybe it doesn't matter if all the variants sell well. But still, my main concern is that they produce great, compelling cars. I'd even overlook 20 different versions of bullshit as long as there were a couple of truly great models that i can buy. But honestly, I'm worried. I think they're losing focus and trying to do too much. I hope I'll be proven wrong. |
