Just got this text. My number will be a great test to see how this works.

Verizon Msg: Great news, we're now sending potential Fraud calls to voicemail automatically. For extra protection, the iOS 14 update includes Silence Junk Callers, a new feature that auto-blocks potential Spam calls and sends them to your Recent calls & voicemail. It will help but TBH there are ways around it. We rotate our display number hourly so it doesn't get flagged.

I have some that already seem to go straight to voicemail. I never get the call, just the alert that I have a voicemail. Honestly on my personal phone I don't really care because I just don't answer ANY call from any number not in my contacts. Also Tmobile marks most of them as Spam/Scam.

However my business number is a Google Voice number. In order for me to know it's someone calling the business and answer accordingly I have to basically have Google Voice show my business number as the caller ID. So I basically always have to answer calls from the business number. Not many spam calls get through, the issue is like 2 asshole motherfuckers who call every fucking day with the same shit over and over sometimes multiple times per day. I sure do hope they die a slow horrible death.

Which goes back to my post about having phone numbers be treated the same as domain registrations for DNS on the Internet. While there are probably ways to get around it, I can't help but expect this would cut down on a large amount of this BS. Both with the amount of work required to go through registering a phone number and the ability to go back to the registrant for legal/civil remedies.

What difference would that make? I'd estimate that 75% of the phishing emails that I catch in the nets at work are from phished accounts with valid SPF and DKIM.

I am starting to think that the best plan is to just abandon the PSTN in favor of privately-managed voice/video services such as Facetime, Skype, etc.....

I had a warm and fuzzy chuckle from a name-dropping sales spammer in my work email today.

It (no reason to humanize spamming scum) claimed that a named individual in another department gave it my contact info, because I was responsible for buying yada yada.

The name that it dropped is the director of yada yada, and I'm sure that he referred the spammer to me as a blow-off...and because I run the email spam/malware/phish filters.

It doesn't take much to make my day.....

I got a spam / scam call at 6:40 a.m. this morning. It rang once and somehow went to voicemail. Automated message looking for a credit card for Quickbooks.

I received a political spam text this afternoon. For some background, I have a grandfathered ancient UNLIMITED data plan with Verizon, the type that's so old that they didn't think to put in disclaimers about throttling and QoS priorities. As a result, I have to pay full price for phone upgrades, have limited talk minutes, and ZERO free texts. If I change the plan to add texting (which I don't even use), they would un-grandfather me and make me sign up for a new plan with limited "unlimited" data.

With that said:

Of course, I am pretty sure that "Logan" is a bot, and the capitalized UNSUBSCRIBE triggered a canned opt-out response. However, if a check for $0.70 shows up in my mailbox from the candidate's campaign fund, I might reconsider voting for her opponent and actually look at her platform.....

You know that was a bot, responding to your UNSUBSCRIBE? No one actually reads replies to those political spam messages.

ETA: Ah, I missed what you said at the bottom of your post.

I've started answering my phone with, "Hello, we have been trying to contact you regarding your vehicle's extended warranty." Then silence for a second. I get one of two reactions - 1. Immediate hang-up or 2. Uncontrollable laughter.

My Robodialer app's "revenge-bot" answers my phone pretending to be a radio station call-in line, telling the scammer that they were caller # 5 and won a free cruise.....

Yep. And even worse is they seem to all be automated so you can’t troll and be a dick to the spam caller

The latest I've been getting is spam package delivery / shipping notifications, addressed to people who aren't me, via text message. Some claiming to be from FedEx, USPS, etc, all with shortened links to click for tracking or confirmation or whatever.

Also notice an uptick in "Visa / Mastercard" approval calls, they usually hang up as soon as you say "huh, so Visa and Mastercard have teamed up now eh?" or basically anything other than "oh great thanks so much here's my bank account info".

I've been getting this same text. Just delete them.

If any of them come with an automated voice I block them immediately. The last one who asked for Kerry Howard I told them he died. They then asked if I need health insurance and I told them they were inconsiderate trying to sell a product to someone who was mourning a person they don't even know.
