I've owned a DCT M3 (E92) and a 6MT M3 (E90 zcp) in the past.
Then, I got a 8spd AT Lexus IS-F and now a 6MT TT-RS. I still do not know which one I prefer. I honestly like both trannies (AT and 6MT) |

In case anyone wonders, the last 7 series with a manual transmission was E38. The last manual 7 series that was sold in the US was the E32 735i. Between 1988 and 1990, BMW built only 1,069 of them. Just to put it in perspective, BMW built 30,198 automatic versions of the same model.

I've driven many types of transmissions. Honestly, the traditional H pattern w/ clutch is only good for some fun/enthusiast driving. It's not built for the track, even though it obviously can be used, but hey, so can an AT. The H pattern is too error-prone and you can easily misshift, causing some potentially serious damage. I have DCT in my E92 M3, and I really enjoy it 90% of the time. I've taken it on the track and it's great for upshifts. On downshifts it's kinda retarded sometimes. I've driven true dogbox racing SMG's in entry level formula cars, and they're great on the track.
I'm actually looking at getting my hands on a used Radical SR3 RS next year w/ a 6spd SMG dogbox. I will also be doing Euro delivery on a new 550i in 2 weeks! I opted for the 8spd sports AT w/ paddles. Sometimes I miss having an H pattern, as I did on my '89 325i, but when I sit in LA traffic I'm glad I don't have a clutch for my DD. |

I woulda loved a manual transmission in my e92 m3, as i had it in my previous e92.
The reason I got DCT, was for the people around me. My mom and sister do not know how to drive manual; as well as the future Mrs. (as i do want to keep this car forever). Yet my mom or sister have not driven my car, so haha I guess it's a good sign either way. All in all, if i had an extra personal car for me it would be in a MT. E46 M3 so raw with the MT.

I had a manual E93 M3 and actually prefer driving a manual. My M6 GC though is a DCT. Considering traffic in the Bay Area and the kids, my last two cars have been automatics.

I have never driven AT or DCT car that is as engaging to the driver than a Manual. Period.
Are manuals a bitch in traffic? Ya sometimes but really if you know what your doing then you don't even think about it. I'm sorry but as efficient as these auto's and DCT's are they will never be able to transmit that beautiful connection between you and the car. Same reason people love Bikes. they are RAW BMW has always committed to building the drivers car, not the car that drives you. I hope the bean counters keep it that way.

Many ppl who don't "get" MT are simply afraid of the unknown. With this comes intimidation.
Now that the performance and efficiency numbers back them up, they will continue to live in their world without the pleasures of truly "driving" rather than moving around. Their loss! |

If HALF the people on this forum who are constantly whining about the lack of 3er manual availability would BUY one, the balance would surely swing to the other end

availability of manuals is whats killing it, i had to wait 6 months in order to find a 335is with a manual and had to wait for ED to pick up my M3 with a manual. But i guess the wait was worth it

I don't have brand loyalty. If BMW stops producing cars with MT, I go elsewhere. Hell, I'm about 90% certain my next car won't even BE ANY BMW, period. Non-///M cars just don't handle right, and at this point, I'd rather have an older MT car for DD, and a track/weekend MT car. Point is, I'm not giving up the three pedals, ever.

All I know is when I picked up my M3 during Euro Delivery the delivery specialist said, "BTW thank you for buying the 6 speed". I am guessing they are not seeing as many MTs coming through the doors these days at the Welt.
