Some fun military trivia (if you think F1 is expensive):
It takes the USAF about 7 years and 11 million dollars to produce a qualified fighter pilot.

The rough operating cost of an infantry soldier in combat is between 1-2 million dollars per year.

At one point when we couldn't airlift fuel into northern Iraq they estimated that it took 80-100 gallons of fuel to deliver one gallon to the remote bases.

You should see what it costs to train an Air Traffic Controller! We (used to) washout a good percentage of trainees. Now, they pretty much certify anyone that fills the correct box.

Thank goodness they eliminated all that wasteful spending. It probably introduced that 'we can sometimes even use the same runway for two planes at a time' efficiency

Or more! It's called MITO (military interval takeoff?), IIRC. The ANG tankers used it when I was at SLC in the mid-late 80's.
