Just curious, why wasn’t he arrested? Now that would have been a great example but I fear if I did what he did I would have been arrested. Not trying to throw rocks here, just trying to understand.

His driving didn't make the threshold for criminal offences, I recall issuing him a number of offences under the HTA, Ontario has a reciprocal agreement with most states including NY so there was no reason to detain him for that. And although he failed the attitude test when the car was towed he didn't cross the line. It was made clear that getting arrested would mean detention for a few days as he didn't have a Canadian address. His crew were much closer to getting to stay with us. I can be very diplomatic though.

Does driving an unregistered vehicle void you're insurance? I mean if it does then this car is going to be on the road unregistered and uninsured for over a month. That's quite a gamble for even a very good and cautious driver because so many other drivers are not good or cautious.

As someone who has had there ccw in California, what is your recommended dialog/approach to the officer when getting pulled over or interacting with LE? I have taken a ccw classes and they tend to say the same thing, but whats an actual officer's opinion?

Listen, do not follow the advice of people who tell you not to disclose. As LEO's, we can pull you out of the vehicle at any time and for any reason (...or no reason at all). If you don't disclose and I decide to remove you from the vehicle and search you......and I feel a gun, it's going to be a bad day for you until things get sorted out. It's not worth the hassle. ....they can record all they want, but they won't have their phone in their hands pointing it in my direction. I can articulate in court gun phones, etc. They won't win that one. Also, if a person refuses to provide identification, refuses to exit the vehicle, requests a supervisor, etc., they are going to jail for my trouble. I don't encounter a lot of push back. I have quite a bit of command presence on a traffic stop. I can count on one hand the number of times a person has requested a supervisor. I wear a body cam, so that shuts down a lot of the bullshit. |

Sad loss of life. Better tactics might've saved this officer's life.

I think it is awful that some people forget that there are many individuals who are willing to: (1) put themselves in harms way, (2) deal with people at their worst, and (3) help those in need. Instead, those people choose to focus on, what I firmly believe, are the outliers. |
