Gas headed for $2/gallon. Re-thinking my f80 plans ...
I've had BMW's for the past decade. And with each new iteration, I find myself less and less impressed with their efforts.
Which got me thinking ... it's got to be me, not BMW. Sure, they may not feel like BMW's of yesteryear, and may not evoke the same emotions and raw feeling of utter driving bliss ... but by God they make some of the best cars around! Period! It's not you BMW ... it's me! Simply put, I've been spoiled by BMW's to where not even a BMW seems good enough anymore. So, I'm thinking of taking a detour with my next car. Heading in a different direction. Maybe a palate cleanser is due for, to put things into perspective. And with gas this cheap (won't be here forever), why not! Something big, brawny and freaking loud and obnoxious. Must have 4 doors. I definitely prefer manuals, but don't mind driving an auto for a while too. In the name of change. New is better, but also don't mind something lightly used. I'd also prefer to not get slaughtered selling it. Here's what I've come up with so far: Any other suggestions? What say you bimmerpost? |

Not sure how much research you've done with the new Dodge's, specifically the Charger and Challenger, but before I committed to my F80 I took a look at a Challenger SRT.
Very fast, but that's the only positive I can offer from my perspective when compared to the BMW. I figured maybe I'd take a break from BMW's too, and worked up a potential deal with my local Dodge dealer. The lease rates are absolutely ridiculous. My F80's sticker was $19.5 more than the SRT and with all the terms being equal, 39 mos/15k miles/year, etc. the lease payments for the SRT worked out to $50 more per month. Although I'm sure I could have negotiated a better deal, why bother? I figured I'd regret the SRT before my second payment.

Go for it... what could possibly go wrong buying a Dodge Charger with a 700HP engine plopped in it?
Just don't become a statistic... like the guy who already wrote off his Challenger on the way home from picking it up. It does look like an interesting package. Not one I would be interested in (I would take the new C63 over this any day of the week and twice on Sunday) but that shouldn't sway your decision. P.S. I think your post is in the wrong section... this isn't an M3 General discussion... maybe an M3 Vs. is more appropriate.

If you are interested in the Charger, it might make more sense to ask the question on a Dodge/SRT forum. Kind of like if I went to the Audi forum and told them that I don't like their car enough to buy it and am thinking about an M3 and asking their opinion. The "I don't like your car but give me another option" threads don't typically go well... I think understandably. This may not be exactly what you are doing in this thread but you get my drift.

With the gas prices being so low, I was thinking about acquiring a Pagani Huyara...what does everyone think?
Just a little levity...happy new year everybody!

Hold on, last month you were the member considering an X1 over the M3...and the one with the huge student loan thread. This is likely not how to start off 2015.

I never understood talking about other cars on a forum dedicated to a particular brand... There are dodge forums.

And I'm not even set on the charger hellcat. I was hoping to get more options from current and past M3 owners. But I ultimately agree. The M3 VS forums would have been a more appropriate place for this thread. I guess no real appropriate place to post it, if I'm seeking an objective opinion. Fanboys will be Fanboys. |

I drove a challenger, not a charger a few years ago. It was a rental that I got in BMW dealer, since they ran out of loaners. It sounded nice, it was comfy. But interior was awful like a typical American car, and driving dynamics were awful. Even my X5 back than felt more dynamic, sharper, more responsive than that car. M3 is a completely different class, there isn't even a comparison to be made IMO. Personally I would definitely prefer a 328 to a challenger. And back than I thought giving me that car was a marketing move, to make me realize how superior BMW driving experience is.

Exactly the kind of input I was hoping for. Thanks man. And agree totally. I'm not in the market for an M3 competitor or replacement. Actually something very different from an M3, and more obnoxious, to make me appreciate BMW again. That's all. But I appreciate your post. |

Falafel Combo If you like Dodge, go for the Challenger SRT HellCat. $60k / 707HP / Mean Looking. IMO, the Charger looks hideous (I can't get over that stupid side door crease). Keep in mind those are good 1/4 mile cars, but drive like shit on other conditions.
If you really want a proper American sedan, the 2016 Caddy CTS-V will have the new Z06 motor. It's ok to try other brands, true BMW guys will always go back. Especially the most enthusiastic car guys (and gals) are on this forum. I owned many cars in my short lifetime. Each car I've owned before, was always lacking something I couldn't describe. It wasn't HP/TQ. When I picked up a first BMW, which was a 330i E90, I was hooked. The driving characteristic is different, it's just so well engineer and balanced between luxury and sport. 6 BMWs later, I will always have a BMW in my garage (currently have 2). Maybe that new Polaris Slingshot for a fun 3-wheel car, but there will always be a BMW in my garage. |

..Go test drive the new Mustang GT bud, decent handling and good power/torque per recent reviews. Also looks great IMHO. You can drive one off the lot for under $45K, fully loaded with 19s + Brembos. Saw one parked next to my M4 at Starbucks couple weeks back. Good looking car. If V8 American muscle is what you're looking for, the new GT/or Shelby GT350 ( if price not an issue) is the way to go. I'd take one over a Dodge Challenger in a hearbeat!.

This is a just an assumption...most folks who own or lease an F8x have the financial means to pay for gas whether it is $2.50 or $4.50. Another assumption...most folks who obtained the vehicle did not use fuel efficiency as a primary factor when selecting the vehicle.
This may explain some of the tone of the responses that the OP has received. If you can not afford the gas, which will assuredly return to the high three, maybe four dollar range per gallon soon, don't buy the F8x and certainly avoid the Challenger.

The Mustang GT is a gorgeous car. I really hope they make a "gran coupe" version of it (4 doors). It would be incredible on so many different levels. Thanks for that post! |

Yup. I loved my 2006 330i. I agree about BMW's, and as stated in my original post, I believe they are the best of whats around. I'm not leaving the brand. I just need a fling. Maybe 6 months or a year tops. And be back in an f80 LCI. Also I would only consider the hellcat from dodge. If I'm driving a dodge, it's going to be a freakin 700hp maniac! CTS-V is a very interesting option as well. Man, this thread is taking a very nice turn again! |
