Am I the only one who finds this completely depressing? Not only is active sound just a recording, but looks like:

1. Pretty much every BMW must use it?
2. You can make your BMW sound like any other?

Really, you should now also demand a recall.....and suggest an S55 is basically an N55 with tweaks. That will be the thread to end all threads



Anyway, I'm not hugely depressed by this.

The fact is: the F80 sounds good. (800km in and I can now say this with some comfort) from inside or outside. I really don't care what other cars sound like at this point. I like mine.

I thought I read somewhere that active sound was real-time and live engine noises fom the engine bay, amplified and piped into the cabin. So the sound is essentially ... Synthesized and pre-recorded?

If that's the case, I think it's laughable.

So musing here on how it works in the M235i.....

I guess that the same audio processor (or a similar one) exists in the M235 and, based on the throttle position/speed/load in that car, will make sounds like the F8X. (or, if that other post is to be believed, like an S63 or whatever other engine one wants)

So inside the car, one hears noises that are like a different car.

But how would that work with window-down driving (where one can hear the exhaust?) I know that Active Sound is about filling in missing intake noise, not exhaust noise, but shouldn't it still match up in some way to the exhaust? Would there be a disconnect there?

also, frankly, from that video I guess I hear what the car sounds like with that coding but not what a normal M235 sounds like. So I don't know how much of a deal it actually is. Is it that different from normal M235 active sound? Some folks on this forum say with ASD off they don't notice a big difference, some say they do. My gut says the unreported part of that story is that the M235 Active Sound and the F8X Active sound don't really sound all that different.......and, frankly, neither may sound like much at all. But, again, this is all just intellectual speculation at this point. I don't really care beyond curiosity 'cause, again, I like my car and the way it sounds.

I like my car as well but not because of how it sounds. I don't dislike the sound either, it's just ok and it does what BMW intended to, it offers good aural guidance of engine speed.

According to this old thread, Bimmerpost had received confirmation from BMW that the Active Sound in the F8X is "a live amplification of the S55 engine's natural sounds. There is no artificially generated sound or pre-recorded track being played."

Same for this article where BMW is quoted saying "Critically, there will also be no artificial sound generation – the electronic noise (which BMW calls Active Sound) will instead simply be a real-time amplification of induction noises actually produced by the engine."

I did not find any source that confirms otherwise
