Rocks in rotor shields
Before my break in service, I noticed an occasional metal scraping sound coming from the rear. I was worried that my diff was going... but the sound would just disappear and randomly come back (sometimes when going over a bump). At my service appointment, they told me they found rocks in the rotors and removed them. I haven't heard the noise since...
During an M6 track event i attended over the summer, the cars there also suffered from these rotor rocks... so much that the instructor had the tell people to ignore the rock sounds. Also I remember people having problems with this in M3post, complaining about cowbell noises. Is this a problem with BMW or all cars in general? I've never had this problem before. |

BMW mostly... just get the heat shields removed at the next service and it won't happen any longer.

My E92 would have this happen all the time and it was annoying as hell. Had it happen once so far on my F82 and it was a pretty violent sound on my CCBs. But went away with a few rotations thankfully. Felt bad for my poor rotors.

If I paid that much for brakes, I would cringe every time a rock was bouncing around in there.

Meh, it's just a car. If you go around worrying about scratches, chips, rocks and everything else, you will never enjoy it. Sooner or later some idiot will bounce off my car and wreck it and it won't be perfect anymore and a rock in my rotor will seem laughable. Circle of life.

Happened to my wife's Kia Soul. The sound was so awful that we had it towed, to avoid what we thought was catastrophic failure. Meh. Happens. No worries.

Should happen a lot less on the F8X because the shields are scalloped in shape, and much farther from the rotor than in previous M's. It's definitely a PITA on the E9X's.

Wow, glad I read this post. My M3 is two weeks old, and yesterday on the way to work I was getting an occasional metal on metal type of grinding sound from the rear. Also was worried it was my diff. Hope it's jus this. Hasn't actually happens again since, but still has me worried.

What did he mean by "rocks in the rotors"? Where in the rotors exactly could that be?
I'm just wondering because I would like to inspect mine for any debris. Thanks |

Rotor/Heat Shield Metal Scraping Noise
Like many of you - I've had that terrible metal scraping sound coming from the heat shield behind the rotor when a rock gets stuck there. It happened again today as I was driving by my dealership, so I pulled into the service bay.
The SA called the shop foreman over, I only had to move the car 3 feet for him to hear the awful sound (and have everyone in earshot cringing). The foreman immediately knew what the issue was because he received an email about this issue this morning from the regional service manager - there is a definite design flaw with the heat shield and its vents, the vents are allowing rocks to fly up and get stuck there. He can remove the rocks but BMW does not yet have a solution to prevent this from happening. The dealerships have been instructed to fully document any cases they come across. I am hoping the more cases that are documented, the quicker a solution will be found... If any of you get this sound and can get to your dealership with it still happening, please do so ASAP so more cases can be recorded. I'll post any updates that the SA or foreman have for me. Sidenote- the brakes on the M4 are amazing. If you ever want to appreciate how great they are, drive a loaner X3 around for a few hours

Thanks for the update! BMW corporate already have my case recorded. I know many here has just bent the shields out but my dealers service techs that I trust adviced against it since there is very little clearance to components on both sides as the e-brake. They recognized the issue and recommended to wait for a solution from corporate.

I already spoke to my dealer as well. More people will/should let their dealer know if this is happening to them

The shield is constructed from tin. I reached in and pushed the shield away from the rotor. Noise went away. I went to BMW anyway, they said they havent figured out a fix yet. I had them document that I was concerned because if the shield damages my CC rotor I dont want to know about warranty not handling it.

Thanks for the update. Mine has been behaving lately. The last time the noise was constant I drove a few miles to the dealership and the noise went away literally 20 feet before I pulled in.

The first time I heard it I seriously freaked out and thought all 4 wheels were hanging off of the car. It's really bad.
I'm guessing they will have something out by the spring so we aren't driving around looking (sounding) like idiots this summer.
