Non-M BMWs with factory M branding
I know this has been covered before but I think BMW has completely confused it's M brand by sticking the logo on the side of most of their new vehicles (I guess to denote the M Sport package).
I had a note today from someone saying they just tested a one year old Z4M... Go figure. Also had a colleague tell me how impressed they were at the mpg rate they had from their 'M3' hire car. Then they mentioned it was diesel powered... Turns out it was a 2L M Sport. I feel like this is just making genuine M cars appear like the rest of the range and perhaps they should have made up some other logo to denote sporty trim levels etc. Bob |

There is historical precedence for M-badged series cars. But i agree, as general awareness of the M division increases people with these M-sport packages start having illusions

Joe woo woo aka BJ will chime in to straighten things out. He's in it for the badge.

M is turning into AMG, with the badge whoring. It doesn't bother me though, I know what I'm driving, and frankly, most other people don't care.

I could care less about the Msport badge that comes from the manufacture. People who buy an "M" to stick next to their 328i is another story. Happens a lot in my city.

Seems like the delusions even spread to BMW's indirect employees. Our Performance Center chauffeur was convinced that the 740d M-Sport was a legitimate ///M car. I tried to get into an M-Sport trim conversation but it was futile after the first 20 seconds...

Bmw does it so much that people now think it's okay to do it themselves. I was behind an M Sport X3 with a real M emblem glued in front the of the X3 emblem.

I didn't mind this at all with the e9Xseries/e9x m3. I think that's what I loved so much about that car compared to the f3x M. The m4 now is SO similar to the 435 it's very difficult to tell the two apart unless you're one of us who can look at the car and tell the subtle differences, but to the common eye- and especially with how common m3/m4s are becoming, they can't tell them apart.
The e9x m3s power dome(buldge) on the hood was a classic. That+the body kit made it look different from all other 3s. I wish BMW had done the same for this generation. I see people putting M badges on everything- even non BMWs and it doesn't bother me whatsoever. It's when they try to pass it off as a true M that it gets annoying, but hey- whatever makes em happy

IMO- you don't get into any M to stand out but for its performance /handling. Other than the i8- as beautiful as any M is, they're relative "sleepers" which is fine by me. Love your car btw- SO truly is my favorite color on the m4
