Has Anyone Heard of: PLASTCcard?
A very interesting and intriguing concept. Considering I have @ 4 majors and a few other store cards as well...

I pre-ordered the Coin when it was first announced at the beginning of 2014. 14 months later and I still hadn't received it, so I cancelled my order.
I think Plastc is pretty much better in every way. Chip and PIN, much better screen, etc. The Coin's battery was supposed to last up to 2 years before needing to replace the card. I see that Plastc is rechargeable, but I wonder if it will really last over 2 years without losing most of it's battery life.

This thread reminded me to check their website www.onlycoin.com. Looks like they JUST NOW started shipping cards this month. Talk about failure to execute!

Why is this a better solution than Apple Pay, Google Wallet, etc.?

Not all retailers accept RFID, and some even block Apple Pay even if they accept other forms of RFID payment (CVS does this). Cards like PLASTC and Coin supposedly are swipeable at all terminals, so they don't depend on RFID. I was a part of the Coin beta and found that it worked around 80% of the time. Hopefully they improve this when they ship the standard product. |

That's a cool option... I'm sick of having to find wallets that has 3 rows to fit all my frequently used charge cards, loyalty/rewards cards, and ID window so that I can buy a damned beer without having to pull it out like the cashier is the frickin' cops.

I can see debit cards going away all together within 10 or so years. We'll just have apple pay or the like attached to our bank accounts. Credit cards are another story though. How they'll be accepted as payment will likely be though RFID, but i'm not sure how long it would take for apple pay or google wallet to start offering credit accounts. Its interesting to see how long large companies will play nice together. I for one hope the new technology is about streamlining everyday tasks for consumers, without having one giant company control everything.

PLASTC and Coin may not work with CVS or Walmart since they are going to MCX and it not a CC or Debit card it a unique system they are coming up with so they do not have to pay CC companies a transaction fee of 3% to 5% it will use a QR code and you will need a phone with a camera to scan the QR and then display back a QR for the cashier to scan. These universal CC are years late to the game that is why Coin failed to launch the could not get the stores or CC companies on their side and I suspect PLASTC will run into similar issues. |

Agree, this just seems like a stopgap until NFC payments are widely accepted everywhere.

Bingo! Visa, Amex, etc will all still exist only in a virtualized state accessed via a smartphone...ala Apple Pay. I would guess probably close to 75% of US consumers have a smartphone of some sort.

yeah, WAY too many smart phones in circulation and they are far too capable for it not to go that route. It's just the next logical step.

I'm not too keen on using NFC as a payment method yet. The reason being is that I will still be carrying a wallet with my ID, some cash, and office key card anyway, so why not keep the two credit cards I primarily use in the wallet as well. Now for someone who has a multitude of cards, I guess it makes sense to load them all into Apple Pay or Google Wallet.

i've switched to what amounts to a money clip that has 6 slots for cards.
For the foreseeable future, I'll always have to carry my ID and CC permit. But if those are the only 2 cards i need to carry, i can even slim down my current set up. So i'm on board.

I know having all those features integrated into your phone is kind of a holy grail for some people. The way I see it though, once all that functionality is controlled by your phone, it is susceptible to one point of failure. If you happen to drop and break your phone, lose it, or the battery dies, you then are not able to pay for things, get into your car or house, show your ID if requested, etc. Sure, you will probably have backups of these items in the form of cash, credit cards, physical keys and ID, but they will not do you much good if they are not on your person when needed. It will be interesting to see how a digital ID would be implemented, and keeping it difficult for people to forge. When ordering a drink at a bar, would you have to hand your phone to the bartender to show your digital ID (hopefully they don't drop it), or would it simply be read by NFC? I'm definitely curious to see how some of this future tech will evolve, I just don't ever plan on being on the bleeding edge of it.
