I was just there in March while on vacation in the smokies. Gorgeous mansion but just not sure it's worth the $60 for the admission ticket.

Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the door. Proceeds go to BMWCCA foundation...

The 2002 is not an Alpina, it is a "Lux" model, owned by a gentleman from Plano, TX. Had never heard of the "Lux" variety before today...
And yes, the grounds of Biltmore are beautiful! Would be a great place to explore/run/bike... My wife and I are looking at lots around Asheville, thinking we'll move here when the last kid goes off to college...

Just a FYI - Cost of living in Asheville is very high...along with surrounding towns. Job market is not robust either, unless your in healthcare, banking, CPA or attorney... The food and beer however - is fantastic! |

Yes, researching Asheville now... Not concerned about job market as this would be time to retire!

Even in retirement - Asheville is one of the most expensive places to live using national COL index. FWIW - and unless $$ was not an issue in retirement, would recommend a little further outside of Asheville, but within 20-30 minute drive.
Summer and fall are crazy with tourists. The roads are terrible (infrastructure) and it is exponentially multiplied in leaf season... I lived in Waynesville (20 miles due east) and still own a cabin there. I do miss the food and the ability to find the most amazing roads anywhere you travel. Outside of the Biltmore, the Grove Park, the BR Parkway, the food and drink, the Casino - not much to do except drive mountain roads and see waterfalls. The health care is ok, better in other cities in NC - and the town is very hippy centric...hard to fully explain, but your first experience with a downtown drum circle will clear up any questions you may have. Greenville SC is a great alternative. Asheville would be a 30 minute drive away, and has so much more to offer in terms of events, activities, and general quality of life. |

My parents retired there and Sanibel 50/50. It's nice in the summer but now mountain roads in the winter. Also very liberal artsy bohemian area. Gotta like that or it'll drive you nuts

I have to apologize! Thought for sure I had a better shot of the Porsche but I don't...
Here are some others to make up for that!
