My dream BMW: The 1988 Alpina B6 3.5S' period review by Performance Car (1989)
Imagine the iconic E30 M3, but with BMW's 3.5 litre inline 6 installed in it and tuned by Alpina to 254 BHP. This may have been the best E30 M3 iteration ever! Only 62 were made between November 1987 and December 1990...
From Alpina: http://www.alpina-archive.com/?page_id=53 Enjoy the read!

Maybe, but how did your 1987 mustang take a corner?

So then grab my c4 vette. Faster and better cornering. Ano e92 328 will still be better than both probably. I was underwhelmed by it back then. Thought it was underpowered and the rear quarters looked like an afterthought. Still feel the same.

is it me, or should it be a lot faster than that?
the s52 m roadster was about the same weight and had less hp, but clocks 4.5 second 0-60 and low 13 second quarter miles same with the heavier e36 m3 maybe tire technology? |

Possibly but remember it's got less power than an e9x 335i.I'd guess with modern tires acceleration would be similar. You're getting this for what it is, not how it performs. With that in mind I always thought it was the ugly duckling of the 3 series with the rear quarters.

I never thought of it as a race car any more than any other m3. Sure some later ones were made less track dedicated, but it still has a full interior etc.

Guys, this is 1989. No it shouldn't have been faster, 0 to 60 in six seconds was pretty damn quick in 1989, no matter what car was producing it.
And no, it wasn't the best E30 M3 iteration. That goes hands down to the Sport Evo. VERY cool article though, thanks for posting. The M30 is such a fantastic engine. |
