Cayman GT4 or Audi R8 V10 (1st gen) -- give me your opinions
Looking to pick up either a GT4 or R8 V10 (1st gen, pre-2014, R-Tronic). Both are about the same price (low 100k range).
I know they're quite different cars and I'm very familiar with both cars, and yes ultimately it's my decision, but always nice to get some fresh and different perspectives from my fellow members here. I don't really track (once in a very blue moon), but do like to hit up canyon roads often. Neither car will be used for daily driving, only weekend pleasure type car. Thanks! |

GT4. very exploitable on the street.
manual. a better canyon carver imho. R8 if you want 'flash' my budget was about the same, i considered the R8 and Gallardo. came down to a low mileage GT4 versus a "high" mileage 997.2 GT3. i choose the GT3. 2016-09-29_02-54-28 by Neil Lee, on Flickr

I've driven both extensively. For what you describe wanting to do, agree with others on GT4.

I've spent quite a bit of time in GT4's.. one on the west coast and our Vossen GT4... I find it to be one of the most soulful and wonderful cars ever. It's just "right". It's also not too cramped and has tons of cargo room for such a small car. The manual is magical.. the sound... yes it's not overpowering but that's part of what's so delightful.. you can really exploit the cars talents and yours.
You can see pics here of the Vossen GT4. http://www.vossenwheels.com/gallery/...s.aspx?id=3068 The #itswhitenoise GT4 had more options.. the carbon bucket seats are amazing but if you have wide hips like myself.. it can be tight on road trips... http://www.vossenwheels.com/gallery/...s.aspx?id=2094 |

Absolutely love the V10 R8. That engine is positively savagely erotic. Yes. Erotic. Ultimately, it comes down to which one you can't stop talking about after driving.
Be honest with yourself.

I think the R8 will be the more "exotic" choice, but not the best "drivers" car for sure.
The R8 will be the eye candy and I'm sure it's going to get more attention than the GT4. Personally, I've seen quite a few GT4's on the road. I believe I've seen only three or four R8's over the years, so it seems to be a more rare occurrence to see an R8 as well. As others have said, a V10 with a manual would be fantastic. It won't lose value as quickly either since they're not making a manual R8 anymore.

Never driven the GT4.
I drove the R8 v10 recently up Bear Mountain in NY and the car is magical imo. It handles incredibly, sounds amazing, and the ride is very good. This particular one had about 22k miles on it and it felt extremely solid. The AWD gives you amazing confidence, steering was direct and very heavy (BMW like), and the V10 behind you just make beautiful noise. Its definitely on my list of cars to get in next 5years as prices go down a bit and I have more $$$ saved up. Im a huge fan of the looks of 1st gen R8 ever since it came out, the new one is not my cup of tea. |
