Manual Transmission - ECU Rev Match
Cause it is Sunday, and I am bored, I will also pose this question:
Do you consider it good or bad when manual transmission have automatic rev matching (blip on downshift) built in? My view is that is cheating. It is my job as the driver to match revs. Have a great Sunday!!

I'm old school, hell I'm old. I like less electronic interference (assistance), I know it can make the car faster but I'm not racing. I just want to drive the car and enjoy myself, there is something about rowing through the gears, hitting the apex and winding it out coming out of the corner......the sound, the smell the feeling.

I have faith that there enough gear heads on a car forum to discuss the finer points of standard transmissions.

And I have rowed the boat a fair bit. One endurance weekend in our integras racks up ~3400 shifts for each driver. So much fun.

Electronic nannies usually ruin a good manual transmission. So do clutch delay valves, dual mass flywheels, and shifters that feel like jello.

Do you consider adjusting the air fuel ratio automatically or adjusting the ignition timing automatically also cheating? Because that had to be done by hand too in the early day's
Same goes for a choke. Synchronized gearboxes?!? blasphemy I tell you!!

People try to make these statements in too broad a manner. I wouldn’t have bought the car if it didn’t have auto rev match - or I would have bought a dct. Daily driving in shitty traffic sucks. Having to dance my feet around the pedals at 7am on the way to a job site without enough coffee in me is a fucking nightmare.
If the car was a dedicated toy, then whatever. But for a normal person, with normal to above average ability, auto rev match is great. |

I would prefer a throttle cable attached to the throttlebodies. But alas, progress. On that note, I bet a carbureted S65 would sound pretty horny. |

Like the idea of it being an option. For the most part, if you have a MANUAL transmission, you wan to be able to control it MANUALLY. And no thanks to Lups for her usual brain dead reply. Either drive the car or let it drive you....

No interest here. I do wish modern engines didn't have such a tendency to hang on to revs though. S54's and rotaries always dropped revs seemingly as fast as they added them, modern engines seem to hang onto them with a certain love.

Everything I said a human can do because they had to be done on early cars and they drove fine. A handfull yes, but drove fine nontheless.
Revmatching is an aid the same way as an automatic choke or a synchronized gearbox is. Why would you prefer a throttle cable? That is not something you can feel per say nor gives it more or less to operate while driving. The weight of the pedal or linearity of the throttle is not related to a cable or wire but the design of the total system. And on that note a carbureted system would sound exactly the same. I dont think you hear the noise from the injectors over the engine noise so whether its injected by an electrical system or the bernoulli effect doesnt make any difference. If a carburetor sounds different its because it is fitted with a different intake manifold or air filter. Fit that to an injected car and it sounds the same. You'll probably end up with <300hp on your M3 though. Thats probably why it has been a very very long time ago that bmw fitted a carburetor (and certainly on an M car bmw never fitted a carburetor, it was usually on the cheaper, lower specced cars, some 30-40 years ago....) What normal people (non engineers) associate with sound coming from a carburetor is usually an open carburetor they've heard. But its the valves you hear, not the carburetor, as that is a silent part.
