Do E90Post Admins use the "Miserable Users" Vbulletin hack on members?
Just curious,
I have read about this hack in the past on the Chan boards, and it's a pretty nasty thing. Essentially it blocks an IP address or user name from accessing the site about 95% of the time. The funny thing is that most of time the member thinks that it's actually their computer that is screwing up because they get timeout errors, long delays, cannot access web page errors, and blank screens when navigating the website. Most of the time the user just gives up thinking that something is wrong with their PC. Some admins & mods on different sites use this hack as an alternative to banning because it allows them to have a little fun with members that they would normally outright ban. Admins are able to track the user and actually see how long they spent trying to access or navigate the site, it's pure evil, really ! The only real way around it is to use a proxy server. I was mostly just curious if e90post uses it, it could be a fun way to mess with trolls, or spam groups? Either way, it's an interesting read. Here's a link and some more info about the vbulletin Miserable Users hack: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/archi...p/t-49810.html So here is what really happens to a miserable user: - There is a random 60-120 second delay each time they click on a link. - 90% of times they have no search engine acccess. - 75% of the times they get the server too busy error. If they don't get the server too busy error: - 50% of the times they may get a blank page - 30% of the times they may get forwarded to the forum main page - 20% of the time they may be able to see the page they asked for. after doing all the math in actuality they have only a 5% chance of seeing the page they clicked on. What kills them is the time they have to wait before anything happens. |

Not to be mean, but it seems like you spend more time on the other chat boards than you do on here.

If delays like that ever occur, it's probably due to a bad node on the trace route. I doubt the Admins would ever do anything like that. They are very professional, open to suggestion, and responsive. Doesn't make sense to do that when it's so easy to simply ban.

Fascinating stuff this vbulletin is! I would really encourage you to check out some of the different mods and hacks for vbulletin. It does take quite a bit of skill to run and maintain a site such as e90, and there are definitely some neat features out there!
