Google reads your email

So I've noticed gmail will provide suggestions for quick replies and now it even auto completes sentences as you type based on context. It could only do this if it reads your emails. Seems pretty sketch to me maybe I should switch to mail.com.

How do you think spam filters work? You think they are clairvoyant or something? I can bet they don't have an actual person reading your emails, it is a machine the same as it has been for a decade.

It does it all on algorithms and prediction (similar to your predictive texts)

No-one reads them, allthough one of the govt listening allegedly does.

I would be more concerned if you emails contain the words

Allah, President and bomb

That would get picked up pretty damn quick

Otherwise, no-one really gives a monkey who your screwing, what porn sites you visist or what your gender bias is

UNLESS you wanna share

Maybe OP should consider going back to the days of carrier pigeons - will enjoy much better security at preventing unauthorized access to his privileged thoughts.

they do A LOT more than just read your email lol.

they most likely have vast databases of all kinds of information on all their users and even those who are not their users.

According to Statista, 70.9% of Google's revenue comes from Advertising Revenue. Nothing is free. Not even gmail

Pretty much, they at minimum know everything about what you like and don't like, and most likely they know one or more of your deepest secrets. But don't worry, all that info is probably just stored in a database somewhere with some type of AI or computer analytics and most likely no human has ever even seen it (yet).

Today, information is money.

Email is inherently insecure. When you transmit any email, it's in clear text. So where ever your email has traversed across the wild wild west of the Internet, there's going to be a signature/footprint left behind. Anyone looking to peer into your email comms can do it. This is why the guidance is to never transmit sensitive data through email. And if you do, have the contents encrypted via utilities like PGP or have files sent password protected.

As an aside, services like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, are not totally free. Yes, you don't need to pay for the service. But everything costs money. These companies are not providing these services free out of the goodness of their hearts. They get revenue by mining your emails among other things.

Gmail is encrypted end to end so if you email another user that is on gmail it's encrypted. They took this step after the revelations from Edward Snowden.

That's within the Gmail servers because they have the private keys. You get zippy benefit from this when you email outside of Gmail which I would say the vast majority of your emails will be.

The key here is "another user on gmail". If you're sending anything outside of gmail, its possibly (most likely) going unencrypted somewhere along the way.

This is just an inherent flaw in the SMTP protocol that has been patched together with things like TLS, but its not a requirement that any SMTP relay actually use it.

Long story short, if you want something to remain private, probably best not to send it via email.

I think the snooping is much deeper than just emails. Someone who knows about this sort of stuff said all those apps that want microphone access are listening to the vocal reaction to whatever you are doing, like looking at an item on a website.

I see folks taping over the camera on their MacBook but that doesn't block the mic. Also cell phones have cameras but people don't tape over those as that would prevent selfies and Snapchat use.

My phone hears everything I say. It's more than coincidental that Dominos emails me when I talk about ordering pizza for dinner or Amazon shows me items I may be interested in that haven't I actually searched for. I don't have Alexa or Google Voice.

Of course Google uses email content to mine data and target ads. No one actually reads it, it's just data that machine algorithms shifts through. That's what all "free" email services do. They have to make money somehow.

Unless you own the service, everything you use online is mined and stored. If you want email privacy, go buy your own email server and run it. Security can be a bit of a hurdle as Hillary found out the hard way.

Right but they can do deep packet inspection on your traffic while outsiders cannot.

I switched to Outlook for Office 365 and use a commercial digital certificate. I pay $4 a month but have my own domain. It actually costs more per month since I pay for the domain and cert plus Office 365.
