I was in cancun last summer, went to Chichen Itza not Tulum but should be awesome.

One thing we did on the way was go to a cenote. Was really cool. Dont forget swimming shorts if you go.

We went a number of years ago. The highlights of what we did was snorkeling with turtles (we saw dozens of them), swimming in a cenote (as previously said) and Tulum ruins (very cool if you like that kind of thing).

I have been twice and stayed at Coco Tulum in a beachfront cabana both times. The best meal was at Hartwood which was featured in the NYT and was outstanding on both visits. A 45 minute drive will take you to Caba, a large complex of pyramids, game structures and larger ancient community than Tulum. Overall, I imagine that the hipsters have overrun it by now but should be fun anyway. PM me and I will share more.

Definitely try to hit Xelha for the day

Tulum ruins are cool, but you roast outside. Still worth it for a half day trip.

I just went there this past Feb

+1, also enjoyed being in playa del carmen more than Cancun by far.

Le Zebra was a great hotel and had fantastic food. Ahau is another good lodging/food option (though no pool like Zebra). There's lots of good food options on the main drag, all within walking distance of those two hotels.

Skip renting a Jeep unless you're going to to the nature reserve south of main "beach area" Tulum or a self-guided Cenote. Taxis are everywhere and plentiful and cheap once in Tulum, but reserve a private shuttle van from Cancun airport then as there are lots of not-nice areas between Cancun and the "resort area" of Tulum, which IS already overrun with shoeless hipsters and potheads!

The beaches, food, reserves, snorkeling and dancing make it at least a go-to once!

Swimming/snorkeling in the cenote is a must.

Grab some authentic Mexican tacos in and around tulum. Lots of good spots. If its a hole in the wall dont get turned away. Just dont drink the tap water.

This. I did half day at Tulum and about died from the heat (May). Xelha is fun, eat all you can, snorkel down the river, zip line, etc... Did half day first, then a full day the second time we were in Cancun.

Tulum is cool mainly because it's the only Mayan ruin by the sea. Chitchen is fancier.

I ate every where and drank everything, didn't get sick. They're getting much better with hygiene these days. Bring a pack of immodium and you should be good

This. I have a 10 yr old box of Imodium that is unopened, but has been carried on 3 Mexico trips.

Tap Water? I was told to order the clean water. They call it "Modelo Negro."
