Bought the SUV - Need dog (UK)
I'm looking for a dog for my family: standard poodle, labradoodle, bernedoodle or similar.
When I look at the reputable breeders online I'm a year out to acquire a dog. Looking for a connection or advice. Thanks in advance |

Do they not have rescue dogs or pounds in the UK? That is what I am doing for my next dog. They have groups for certain breeds of dogs that look for placement and try and get a good fit for everyone.
I am not sure about those breeds or your location but I follow CostalGSR and a few Greyhound groups that work on adoptions.

Go to your local animal shelter and rescue a mutt. Best dog I ever had was a mixed breed that someone dumped on us. Super intelligent and loyal to a fault. No need for a boutique dog.

Rescue. I got the scrappiest looking little guy they had. Legitimately the best dog I've ever had the pleasure of being around. We have had 6 dogs while I was growing up, 3 are still kicking. My 11 month old rescue (Hachi) is loyal as can be, extremely smart, goofy as hell, has an extremely funny personality, he is an absolute blast. He definitely isn't going to win any shows with his messed up teeth and weird mohawk, but he is awesome. I urge you to go to a shelter and meet a couple of their dogs, hopefully you will fall in love with one and take them home.
Side note: Here in the US near me, when the shelters are getting full, they host events where you pay $0 for an animal, shots and everything. |

It looks like the breeds you've mentioned are all considered to be non-shedding, and less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. If that's one of your requirements, and you can't consider a rescue, look into a Portuguese Water Dog. Closely related to the Standard Poodle, and non shedding. It's what all the "doodles" want to be.

To echo some of the others here, I used to have a purebred Malamute. Gorgeous dog. Dumb as shit. I swear he was a product of inbreeding. If he got loose, he would run to infinity. The only way to round him up was to drive the car past him, then stop and open the door. He loved riding in the car so much he'd run right up and jump in. He'd attack male dogs and human males as well. Very unpredictable that way.

Go rescue dog, and don't buy into the purebred hype - look up 'hybrid vigor' if you need more convincing. Go with a reputable no-kill shelter that will take them back if they don't fit in; then you are free to work on fitting them in, without the guilt that you are sending them to die if they don't.
And get a smaller one, so that when you come to your senses and get back into a proper coupe, you will still be able to take them for a ride ![]() |

I have a goldendoodle and a bernedoodle. They are polar opposites in terms of smarts and personality. The goldendoodle, Cooper, is one of the smartest dogs I have any met and a huge asshole (too smart for his own good). Nothing phases him, you can yell at him and he will just bark back lol.
The bernedoodle, Stella, is dumb as a box of rocks but the sweetest girl ever. Also thinks she's a lap dog at damb near 60lbs. Very timid though, if you look at her the wrong way she might piss on the floor. Just ridiculous lol. We had to wait for both of them since we used breeders. Not the most helpful post but they're great dogs! |

This. Best dog I've ever known was a mongrel. Selective breeding results in so many health problems, it should be banned outright.

Rescue dogs are great, sometimes it's nice to know the dog's pedigree too. If you want a rescue, get a rescue. If you want a specific breed, get that. Dogs are awesome, all of them. Treat it well and enjoy.

Pretty sure I was holding a treat. He can do basically any trick in the book, but I wanted a pic. So I'm sure he was thinking "what the hell man give me that damn treat" lol. Like I said too smart for his own good. Meanwhile Stella can sit and shake that's about her limit, on a good day she will speak but it takes awhile.

My family had a similar issue with a Siberian Husky years ago, and we suspected inbreeding as well.
