The second was supposed to be Crime and Punishment, but I cut it short because it was too long in Russian.

The third option is both, and the last is...

Da. Yes, actually from Riga. At the time he did his thing there was still a USSR, so I still think of him that way.

He's a pseudo-Russian then, automatically disqualified. Not to mention you factored in a CHESS PLAYER among literary giants.

If you are a chess player yourself, play through some of his games. His imagination and artistry are without parallel. Russia has produced more world class chess players than world class authors, BTW.

He may be a genius, but I've never lost to a computer at chess...wait.

Poking fun at a chess giant because computers (actually only a few computers) can defeat grandmasters is sort of like saying that Euclid was a yutz because Mortimer Snerd can load a fractal program.

Computers are so good at chess because all of the work of genius grandmasters (everything from openings to endgame progressions) are stored and retrieved. Then world champion grandmasters are paid to help with the algorithma.

Give me a computer programmer without access to chess books or other players and give him 10 years to write a chess program, then load it onto whatever computer you want...Deep Blue, Cray, whatever. Any international grandmaster could beat that program in 10 simultaneous games, blindfolded.

I'm serious when I suggest playing through just a few of Tal's games. It's like hearing Jimi Hendrix play guitar for the first time...not perfect, but new, original and unorthodox.
