What kind of job do you think I can get with this?
I am an Organizational Leadership major at Penn State with an Army ROTC scholarship. I will be a commissioned National Guard Officer after graduation but I will need a civilian job as well. This major sounds a bit shaky in terms of what I can apply it to for a job however I am also told that the major isn't everything. I would like some educated opinions and feedback on what kind of job, how hard I may have to look and what kind of salary I will be looking at with these sort of credentials. Thanks. I have included a link to the description of the program.

If you're at University Park hike the 300 yards from the ROTC building to the Bank of America Center and get a drop-in counseling session. It's their job to help you develop your resume, identify potential opportunities and help you try to get them. Asking here isn't a bad thing, but you're not getting the most out of your time. The counselors there understand the PSU degrees already and have a collective knowledge of where people before you have gone. It also would be a good idea to talk to academic advisors in your college because they also probably have some ideas about previous grads as well.
http://www.sa.psu.edu/career/intake.shtml You must be proactive in your search, particularly in the current economy. Best of luck, enjoy whatever time you have left and throw down a beer for me at the Skellar...or the Cafe, or the Deli, or the Den, or the Phyrst or anywhere else. We Are!

First job that came up on the search. 200k a year, wouldn't exactly call it a BS major. Do some research on answering a question you know nothing about! http://www.diversity-jobs.com/detail...157462/search/ |

Just to weigh in on the OP,
Military/ROTC program during college shows that you can juggle mutiple roles and responsibilities. A lot of companies value that you are doing something else besided just being a student. At my old employer - Accenture. this was one of the major screeens. If the candidate had an outside job or funciton besides just pursuing a degree, they were moved up. Grades do count. It demonstrates trainabiliy and an eagerness to learn and/or discipline to study that will again, get you through the screen.

There are two ways to look at this. For certain jobs such as high end sales, major does not really matter. From this perspective you need to decide what career path do you want to take.
Do you want an intellectual job where you will max out around $200K assuming you are at the top of the pile after 10 years and the security of a steady pay check no matter what? If so you will probably be able to get into a lot of Operations jobs with your degree. These will typically lead to a Director/COO job long term and a 9-5 work schedule. If you are more personable and want more flexibility you will be able to land an entry level sales job. In high end sales you will max out between $400-600K assuming you are top of the pile, but even a mid level sales person will be at $200K within 5-7 years. The advantages are that you have a lot of flexibility since you will not have to be in a office 5 days a week and unlimited upside earnings. The challenge is a HUGE amount of pressure. There is a number on your back every quarter and people are riding you no matter what. You also need to be totally self motivated and realize that the flexibility you have sometimes means 70-80 hour weeks other times. I have a lot more detail, but I do not want to bore everyone. Let me know if you want more detail. |
