I am planning on staining my deck, therefore looking for recommendations for some good outdoor wood stain?

Wood is Pine, pressure treated (i think).

I narrowed it down that i want an oil based transparent stain. I'm leaning towards chestnut tone.

Looking for something durable that's not gonna fade in a year.

I used cabot's on our fence 5 years ago because i really liked a unique colour they had (Burnt Hickory) and it has been excellent, it still beads. Modern trend is to avoid reds and orange tones, more grey/brown.

And Behr is actually making pretty good stain these days…easily found at HD

Whatever you do stay away from Thompson’s water seal…which last bout a month. Def. go oil based product with linseed and tung oils. UV rating/protection is a bonus.

I use Flood CWF on my fence, I roll on, and use brush for cracks, done twice in 10 years...if I was guessing, I'd probably do every 3+ years on a flat deck, 5 on vertical. Get one of those cotton gloves in paint dept. for spindles, saves ton of time. (put plastic glove underneath to avoid splinters, follow with brush for globbing, did all spindles in like 30 minutes, F a brush lol)

We used "Cedar" color as it darkens slightly, gives a bit of warm amber tint (barely) and ages nicely with wood. This is a 12 YO fence, Flood Cedar applied 6 months after put in, it cured in that time, and than a light sand bar and another good coat 4 years ago (don't pressure wash)...may do another coat in year or so, but wood is in great shape.

Deck is with 2 coats of Valspar exterior Stain/paint in Chocolate. (Lowes) Lasts forever and can walk on no splinters etc. I liked the oil stain but with all the flat spots, this covers wood and you'll never replace IMO.

I used to do decks and stains PT, and had best results with Flood. (no idea why on side lol oh well) Thompsons

BM great paints, that may be a Canada brand, never seen Cutek here in Mid Atlantic.

many including myself focus too much on brand, though it is ALL about how you prep the surface.
The better the wood absorbs in the stain the better outcome.

I have used flood in the past, thinking about using this brand this time for other color options

When I lived in New England, I had an 8' height shadow-box style fence around the full perimeter of the back yard.... and wooded land behind us.

I used Behr stain twice in 18yrs.... so about once a decade... held up great!
It was a semi-transparent grey/blue tone.

I used this product for the last 2 years. It looks great for almost one season. Wife loves the color/ look but I hate to have to do the deck every year. I would Love to find something that looks close to this but lasts a few seasons.

In 10 years of doing this I think I could have a trek deck ! Something to think about.

Last pic is at the end of the season before the soft wash. Just 6 months earlier it looked like the just finished pics below. I hate the yearly maintenance but it sure does look nice.

I stained my covered porch deck the first 3-4 times it needed it (every 3-4 years) and I LOVED how it looked when I was done. I decided to hire it done last time and after telling the guy I hated it did not last longer, he suggested I try a semi-transparent paint/stain that still showed the wood grain - but lasted much longer. Completely ruined my porch. Has it lasted longer than I ever dreamed and still beads water? Yep. Does it look like someone painted it with skin colored paint? Yep. And guess what - it can't be taken off with a deck cleaner like stain can be - so I'm stuck with it unless I wanted to strip the entire thing - which would be tough since it is attached to the entire front of my house.

Took me 2 year just to get used to it enough I didn't want to puke every time I looked at it. That is what happens when idiots change their minds mid-stream without doing their research. The stain was a pain, but man it looked good.

Sorry to hear it.

I went through that at my last home. Now I cannot see the grain but it’s a 3-4 year span between applications.

I've used Penofin oil-based stain and sealers on redwood decking with excellent results.

+1 for Cabot as well. Just did my deck last month. Stuck with Cordovan Brown as it was what was down when I bought the house. It does have a reddish tint to the brown. Next time, I'll most likely go darker, considering Bark or Burnt Hickory.
