C-130 Hercules doing a LOOP !
Well, here's something you dont see everyday ! I crewed these for 13 years, done plenty of "Max Effort" takeoffs (what you see in the beginning) but never ever saw one LOOPED !
enjoy

You'd be surprised how much flex an aircraft wing can take. There's pictures out there (maybe videos) of factory max wing flexing. Its crazy to see.
But they probably beefed up the wing box. That's what they do to the "Hurricane Hunter" models and the Blue Angels "Fat Albert"

Here's one of the craziest .....they strapped rockets to one trying to land it inside a football stadium to rescue hostages.

Cool video. The pilot helped himself with some roll, didn't he?

As a private pilot, I always cringe when I see large, non-aerobatic aircraft performing aerobatics at airshows. History shows us too many tragic outcomes, sometimes involving spectators.

No thanks, I know the Herc is over engineered but stretched J model no thanks I'd be ok with a early model pre L-100 with newer engines doing that. But that sure looks like it was running out of smash speed at the top of the apex.
Twenty one years of being an LM on C-5A,B and M, I have experienced enough stupid things. |

We had one in our Squadron that had a catastrophic "sun gear" failure on #3 causing the whole propeller to spin off. It hit #4 on its way out and pushed the entire #4 engine and prop into the leading edge. IFE'd into Maine landing on just the left engines. I did get a "joy ride" in a Galaxy during an Airshow in Santago Chile. Pretty impressed on what that big SOB can do too.

I remember when this happened. Young Captain was "showing off" for his Parents who were visiting. Awful.

If I remember right, the guy who tried to eject was the pilot's commander and didn't want anyone else to have to fly with the pilot.

This one comes to mind. I was on a couple of incidents, one was in Baghdad, pilot set the brakes on fire after a hot landing 22 of the 24 sets of brakes burnt and fuse plugs in ever main landing gear burst. Believe it of not the jet was back at home station before the 12 man crew was home. |

If you train to do maneuvers like the test pilots of Lockheed and Blue Angels do with big Acft, its not that dangerous. It's when the "hold my beer" guy starts doing shit. That's when it goes bad. I never, not once, doubted the C-130 because of all its backup systems even after countless IFE's. The C5 is similar. But the Herc is very nimble for its size and design. Its the "perfect" acft IMO. 130 ft long x 130 feet wide. (non stretch)

Get to watch the C-130's fly all the time, 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown is just about 4-5 miles from my house. Depending on flight paths and manuevers they can be just off the rooftops. Interesting to watch these things, not so sure I want to see one try a loop.
It is getting a bit interesting here lately with the Air Base, C-17 aircraft flying in for training. 9000ft runway and now funding for a new 8 million dollar attack runway. I do like to watch those take of but I must admit I hold my breath for a moment when those take off. It just seems like they are going to fall out of the sky.

The New York ANG flies touch-and-go laps out of our local airport here year-round with their C-17's, turning gazillions of tax dollars into jet exhaust and noise to keep all of their pilots certified.
They used to fly C-5's, until they ran out of scavenged parts to keep them operational. Those beasts were sooooooo big/slow that you could stand under them and wonder how they appear to be hovering and not flying.....

I thought of that crash when I watched the C-130 loop video. That fire tanker that crashed had some previous structural fatigue, though, if I remember right.

Yea, i've seen that video. I cant watch it again.
Things happen, but overall the Herc is a beast of a plane. It literally holds the World Record for being the most diversified acft ever built.
